One way tickets ex Aus
One way tickets ex Aus
I'm hearing that you now cannot board a flight from Australia to Phnom Penh without having another pre-booked flight out of Cambodia. My brother is visiting and he had had to buy a ticket out of Phnom Penh before they'd let him on the plane in Sydney. A mate who's visiting in March tells me the same thing.....Anyone know the story here...? Is it to try and deter any more Aussies from coming here....? Is it an airline thing...? Is it the same from Europe or the US...?

It sounds like nonsense.
Just tell them you plan to die, get cremated and have your ashes cast into the Mekong.

The IATA guidelines state:

Edit: I assume that the "Documents" requirement includes the onward ticket as well as any required visa, there is no indication to the contrary.

The information provided is based on IATA's Timatic database which is used by nearly every airline in the world for determining passenger travel document requirements.(For an Australian flying to Cambodia from Australia)
The following should be taken into account even if holding a Visa:
Visitors are required to hold proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay and documents required for their next destination.

What airline was your brother on?
Over the last 3 years i have had at least 10 one way flights from Australia (Darwin) to Cambodia. I go about 10-12 times a year so most trips are return but sometimes i dont know when i am coming back.
I have travelled one way from Australia on connecting flights on Silk Air, Malaysian, Jetstar and one way flight sectors (ie go out of immigration and check back in at airports) on Air Asia, Jetstar and Tiger.
Only problems i have had, was twice in 3 years Jetstar made sure i had another flight leaving out of singapore as it was not booked as a connecting ticket to phnom penh (no questions about leaving phnom penh), and once from Tiger Air in Singapore saying i needed a return flight. I just said i live there and dont know when i am coming back i will buy one when i am there, they asked if i have had a visa and i said i just get one on arrival at the airport and then they gave me the ticket.
Also on the reverse side of things, once on a one way ticket with SIlk Air for my Mrs coming from Phnom Penh to Australia, Silk staff would not issue her a connecting ticket from Singapore to Australia one way. So i put all the bags on my conencting ticket to Aus and she only go a issued a ticket to Singapore and i said i will buy a return ticket for her in Singapore. As soon as we got to Singapore we went to the Transfer counter and they issued the one way ticket with no questions asked to her.

To be honest I'm not sure what airline he was on. He came via Singapore, so I guess it was either Qantas or Singapore Airlines. My mate's coming out in March on Malaysian Airlines (Yeah...I know) and he reckons it is now a requirement of theirs, as it is with Air Asia. He's booking an outbound flight to Bangkok. And I haven't yet checked out the link posted above...

DetroitMuscle is right, it's at the whim of the airline and the check in staff. Some airlines/staff will require the onward ticket, some won't. Some will simply ask if you have an onward ticket and take your word for it. Others will want to take a quick glance at your ticket. Others will take your onward ticket and spend a minute typing in the details.DetroitMuscle wrote:It's every airline on the world. In Los Angeles at LAX, I had to show a ticket out of Cambodia. I was on a one way because I was moving to Cambodia.
It's all about luck, staff, and airlines.

We had to sign a waiver for my wife on a one way to NZ three years back. Airline just didn't to be lumped with the responsibility and cost of returning the passenger if they were turned away at the border.
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
I am flying to Siem Reap one way from Bangkok with AirAsia. Getting a visa for Cambodia on arrival. Will I require a ticket out as well? I have a flight out of Bangkok back to
Australia and was going to get a tourist visa for Thailand in Phnom Penh. Air Asia was one airline mentioned above that requires an outward ticket from Cambodia.

5. Do I need to have a return flight ticket (back to my country of origin)?
Quick Answer: A return flight ticket will only be required from the holder of a passport issued by Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka or Sudan. Holder of passport issued by any of the mentioned countries will also be required to have a letter of sponsorship and an alien certificate. Click here for details.

I've just booked a one way with Air Asia and it was accepted and have been charged by Pay Pal.
