day time, head to the oriental pier outside the oriental hotel and grab the local boat upstream,
at the end of the line take another boat up a canal,
and reverse,
Makes a great day out
Shopping at MBK and Pratunam
if ur there on the weekend Chatuchak market
Night time a walk along sukumvit

Saxaphone pub was good when i went with a group of lady friends. Good music etc. The public boats on the river are great to get around and dirt cheap, plus it beats the roads. Watch a movie in the cinemas on Siam.
And Lumphini park is great (look out for the huge monitor lizards).

Cheers. Will check out some water stuff and the park, maybe saxophone. I've been to town before, though not for a few years, but not with a whale-wife and 2 pensioners holding my future meal ticket....

Just trying to help, this must be the N°1 place in Bangkok to avoid, can't get more kitschier than this horrific place...
Disclaimer:Reading Khminglish can cause a persistent and seriously disturbed perception of reality...
For a bit of 'fresh' air, nip over to Lumphini park during the day for a picnic/(very gentle) stroll - remind the old folks what it was like to actually have a park and a lake in the middle of a city. The Banyan Tree Hotel/Vertigo Moon Bar (rooftop) is just around the corner, opens around 6pm I think, which might suit well if you hit the park late afternoon. Offers great view across Bangkok & should suit ye olde folk.

Pork knuckle and beer at Tawandang brewery and restaurant (don't let the crapness of the one in PNH put you off).
Chatuchak weekend market - good shopping for the girls, good street food and cold beer for the boys.
IMAX cinema.

Prehaps a late afternoon/evening sitting outside some place at the United Nations melting pot.

occasionally go to tops supermarket n robinsons on charoen krung, bottom of silom near/parallel to river. they got all sorts of marvelous stuff in there that you probably wont find in cambodia. they got none of those pesky security characters to molest you there. also Big C supermarket opposite central world worth a visit but you gotta get there early before it is overrun by the bus loads of Chinese tourists. same, no molesters.
