I'll be crossing into Cambodia at Hat Lek-Cham Yiem (i.e. Koh Kong) and I heard it's really hard to avoid being overcharged
and being forced to pay 1400 baht (around 39 USD) for a tourist visa which costs 30 USD.
So any of you Cambodia experts on here, do you have something that will work?
I'm thinking about printing out the law that says it's 30 USD, but could not find it,
even in Khmer it would be good as I can understand written Khmer a bit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Could you guys help me avoid overcharging at border?

Before any of these stages pretend to yourself that you have been to Cambodia before, know the prices, and money and bullshit are intrinsically linked in the KOW.florian wrote:I'll be crossing into Cambodia at Hat Lek-Cham Yiem (i.e. Koh Kong) and I heard it's really hard to avoid being overcharged

Do it wrong and you can end up getting in a bit of hassle. Do it right and you can normally walk away with a genuine smile on your face because you know the other tourists have been overcharged.
!. Never show anger, even when they do (it's just a ploy of theirs).
2. Take Dollars not Baht
3. Make sure you have $30 and some one's.
4. Don't speak to anyone other than other tourists until after you are actually getting the visa from the immigration guy. If the Tuk Tuks , brother of the high ranking official etc. are giving you a lot of hassle, which they will do even when your trying to fill out your forms, just smile, nod and say 'At te ar-koo-un' .( no thank you)
5. When dealing with immigration itself state the price $30 + $1 for the photo, unless you already have one to give them, and insist, insist, insist demurely and with a big smile. Look as if you have all the time in the world.
.
That normally works. If they tell you to come inside the office, don't worry, it's only so that all the other tourists can't see you aren't being overcharged.
6. At any stage don't say oooooo Klai Nah (too much) I said that to the great big burly bastard (the brother of the high ranking official in PP) and he went spare (no ploy). On second thoughts do say it. I still got my visa at the correct price.

I would always recommend saying "klai nah" to Cambodian males when they are being uncooperative, it will open doors to a whole new world of opportunities.Mr Lovejuice wrote:6. I followed this and it worked, so thanks Mr. LoveJuice. They did give me a hassle though and tried everything to get me to pay more.Mr Lovejuice wrote: Before any of these stages pretend to yourself that you have been to Cambodia before, know the prices, and money and bullshit are intrinsically linked in the KOW.
