Passenger train services to Sihanoukville resume next month
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/business/p ... ces-resume
Passenger trains are set to roll between the capital and the coast next month for the first time in 14 years, a railway official said yesterday.
Sam Oeun Tith, commercial manager of Royal Railway, which holds a 30-year concession to operate the country’s railways, said the company plans to run passenger trains along the 266-kilometer “Southern Line” from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville starting in April.
“We hope it will be the start of a new history after not having passenger trains for many years,” he said. “We plan to run a passenger-only train before Khmer New Year [April 13-16]. The [timing] was selected to reduce road traffic during the holiday and reduce traffic accidents.”
Oeun Tith said passenger trains operating on this route would carry about 400 people in five carriages divided by class, with regular carriages cooled by fans and plush VIP carriages offering air-conditioning.
The journey will take around eight hours averaging 33 km/h, with ticket prices yet to be determined – though he insists the company is aiming to make it “cheaper than the bus service.”

Will never work and I speak as one who did the journey in 1999. For that length of time that need toilets and a catering carriage plus a viewing carriage for tourists to take photos.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

It will be interesting to see how they price it.
Hopefully they'll have private cabins for the quality, flunkeys delivering food and beer.
With the speed cameras it's getting on for six hours in a cab now.

Did this train journey in 2000.
After about 8 hours I was so bored and ass sore that I disembarked my bike to finish the trip by road. Little did I know that being in kompong trash station I was further away from SHV than from the starting point

From next month, apparently.
13 hours, 33km/hr, will have air-conditioned sleepers and rabble seats as well.
I wasn't even aware the track had been laid/ not stolen.
It will be a great trip, I'm sure!

How did it go from 8 hours to 13?
I have made a few train trips in burma over the last year, love it . Figure they average about 25 kms/ hour..
just did a trip yesterday 3 hours by boat, 6 hours by mini van. 210 kms.
In dec did 6 hours by train. Covered 90 kms. Great fun swaying back and forth and watching the old women bouncing in their seats
Travelling is not always anout getting somwhere fast,

The trains in Myanmar are fucking atrocious. I generally love travelling by train, maybe I was just unlucky on the one intercity train trip I did take in the country. The Yangon loop train is interesting, though...
