#Jack Kerouac
I wouldn't have been a mountaineer commando if not for J Verne and A Dumas, worked and greyhound myself across the USA two straight summers when I was 18 if not for J Kerouac, spent a year and half walking across the Himalay if not for N Bouvier, etc...
I understand that travel themed authors can be considered as minor ones compared to some classics authors whose larger framed work on humanity is timeless, nevertheless they can be very inspirational.
"Un voyage se passe de motifs. Il ne tarde pas à prouver qu’il se suffit à lui-même. Certains pensent qu’ils font un voyage, en fait, c’est le voyage qui vous fait ou vous défait."
Nicolas Bouvier
"A trip doesn't need justifications, it is self sufficiant. Some think they make a trip when in fact it is the trip that makes or unravels you"
Personal translation since I don't have English copies of his books.

The man is less important that the words. If you enjoy them and your life is bettered somehow, who cares. If you don't enjoy the writings, don't read them and forget it as soon as it is read. I hate a lot of actors and writers in RL, most are full of shit....but their work...resounds.

Bukowskí is the writer who i read the most. Think i've read 8 of his, but Ham on Rye and Post Office were the great ones for me.
What does The Charming Man think of Bukowski? A man wallowing in drunken self pity???
I think you either love Bukowski or hate him. Same with Kerouac somewhat i guess. There is always going to be contradictions if you go up against society as a whole.

I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

"In 1986 Time called Bukowski a "laureate of American lowlife". Regarding Bukowski's enduring popular appeal, Adam Kirsch of The New Yorker wrote, "the secret of Bukowski's appeal. . . [is that] he combines the confessional poet's promise of intimacy with the larger-than-life aplomb of a pulp-fiction hero.
Live he was Fantastic! One critic has described Bukowski's fiction as a "detailed depiction of a certain taboo male fantasy: the uninhibited bachelor, slobby, anti-social, and utterly free", an image he tried to live up to with sometimes riotous public poetry readings and boorish party behavior
If u get a chance watch the movie "Barfly" written bu Charles with Mickey Rourke staring

I found all Keroac's books to be tedious, boring crap. All those beat writers were overrated. Bukowsi was great except for all the baseball .

Felgerkarb is right, in fact this is the biographical fallacy so enamoured of the new critics in the "conservative" fifties, when Kerouac was at Columbia U. I hope to read more of his stuff soon. There was a good piece on CBC Radio a year ago about his family; in a nutshell, he went from dirt-poor Quebecker in Lowell, Mass, to famous American novelist. No small achievement. The man is less important that the words. If you enjoy them and your life is bettered somehow, who cares. If you don't enjoy the writings, don't read them and forget it as soon as it is read. I hate a lot of actors and writers in RL, most are full of shit....but their work...resounds.
