It's set in post-war Afghanistan. Interestingly, the problems the country was facing then are very much the same as today. i.e. the conflicting visions of the western educated city dwellers who want a modern Afghanistan, verses the mullahs and country folk who want to keep life in the stone age.
I think I have a paperback copy if the OP or anyone else would like it.
