$105? Where do you find that kind of money?
Corruption and scamming would be my guess.
What do they want more...party or tip?

I'm guessing you're rich expat or a tourist?
Don't know if I related this story here before, but even simple acts of kindness can backfire on you.
On my annual trip to Hoi An a few years ago, I brought my new laptop and my old one. The new one had Windows 8 that just frustrated me. Finally sat down one afternoon and figured out how to use it. Lugging two laptops around ain't fun, so I restored factory settings to my old one, cleaned it up and gave it to a very nice lady who I was fond of at my hotel, Mrs. Ha. They don't make much money, so she never could have hoped to be able to buy any sort of computer.
Word spread around I guess. I was getting the silent treatment from the usually friendly reception.
Couple of days later, I dropped off my laundry. Mrs. Phong said, "So, can you bring me an I phone next year?" Mrs. Nga says, "I want one too."
Lesson learned.

I take a nano-bit of umbrage in that. I've never committed any crime (except one time as a child when I shoplifted a pack of Beatles cards. I confessed to Father Kelly who gave me a penance of ten Hail Mary's and told me to go back to the store and pay them, which I promptly did) or scammed anyone. I earned every dime I ever had, and how I choose to spend it is none of your concern.GMJS-440 wrote:$105? Where do you find that kind of money?

I always tip when I leave a hotel or restaurant, and not fifty cents to the maid. Lots of young people work here and they all made my stay very pleasant, even the ones behind the scenes.
And I never leave the tip until I check-out, tell the receptionists to give all staff an equal share, not say who provided it, and leave.

I have worked in hotels for 30+ years. First of all, cash is always preferred. Sometimes you want to tip some in advance, like Housekeeping or F&B; it can make life much easier:-)David L wrote:I take a nano-bit of umbrage in that. Good tip Hanno, tip in advance. One I never remember when checking in. And is it advisable to give the entire sum to the receptionist for distribution? In your experience what percentage of guests stiff housekeeping? In my travels I always ask my traveling companions if they remembered to leave something for housekeeping. Often they will sheepishly thank me and go back and leave a tip. Once, in Costa Rica the housekeeping chased our vehicle out of the parking lot waving the tip. She didn't know it was for her, she had never received one.

If you give it to the reception, housekeeping won't see a Cent. I make sure I find the person cleaning my room and tip him/her directly.GB8 wrote:Good tip Hanno, tip in advance. Ok, ok, I get it, dumb question anyway. The Hoi An staff always have a lot of fun at their pre-Tet parties, and they always invite me. Sorry I brought it up.
I always leave a couple of bucks on my rumpled sheets in the morning.
When I leave a tip for all staff, I always make sure there are plenty of folks around and they understand what I am trying to accomplish.
Money is always best for service workers.

Yes, always good to tip the porter when you check in, get things off to a good start.
Tipping house keeping is easy, especially in Thailand, just dump all your coins in a pile every time you come home and leave them there upon checking out.

You leave her with $105 and instructions to keep $5 and be quiet?David L wrote:I check-out, tell the receptionists to give all staff an equal share, not say who provided it, and leave.
I don't think your tips go where you think they go. As soon as you're gone it's "look at my face crazy barang tip me $100!"

Depends if the hotel has dedicated minibar staff; then they will pocket it as you check out.slavedog wrote:Yes, always good to tip the porter when you check in, get things off to a good start.

Tipping the porter, house keeper and receptionist on arrival is always best, IMO.
Tip the housekeeper daily to enjoy a clean, prompt, hassle free experience..
I like lots of soaps, shampoos and loo paper in my bathroom when in Asia.
It makes sense to tip on arrival.
