I am just a couple of rides away from Hanoi but I don't want to get there until another two weeks have passed. I plan on spending a few days around Thanh Hoa exploring and of course Ninh Binh. Any others spots to the SW of Hanoi worth having a look at , spending a day or two? Gonna meet a mate in Hanoi 25th February and will check out Ha Long Bay together so please no advice about that area.
Cheers for any tips
Around the SW of Hanoi
A lot of Vietnamese gentlemen enjoy the idyllic beach town of Do Son so much they never take their wives there.
Edit: got my east and west mixed up.

Near the big port town, Haiphong. Many a discerning gentleman goes there of a weekend.horace wrote:I looked east anyway for Do Son and couldn't find it. Where's it near?

^^ If it's a place you have been to, I'll probably give it a miss battyboy, and seeing as it is a golfing resort almost a certain miss. But cheers for the info RobW
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
The golf is a bit of a front. Local gentlemen tend to go there for the 19th hole and the immaculately trimmed greens that surround them.
The food is good too.

Just in case anyone else is asking the same question. The best answer would be to head for Mai Chau which is about 130k directly SW of Hanoi. Mountains n paddy fields. Hard work on a bicycle but a piece of piss on a motorbike and of course buses. Although February is perhaps a little too cold.

Seriously, what do love about this place? Yes, the ride in is great and the view is good, but the town itself is filthy the dirtiest I have come across in Vietnam. The lack of decent eating opportunities is alarming, nothing but Pho Pho Pho, the few Nha Hang that I have found just shook their hands and refused to serve me. The tourist village should be renamed the French Tourist Village and then bombed.Hanno wrote:I love Mai Chau and luckily we have a hotel there:-)horace wrote:Just in case anyone else is asking the same question. Am I missing something special that is hidden away?

Great hiking in the area, great running and biking. Food is indeed dire but there are a couple of places with decent food. A cold beer at the Sunset bar goes down well and during spring and autumn the town is full of pretty Vietnamese ladies.
And 13C is not cold. I worked in Sa Pa and would walk around in short sleeves until temperatures dropped to below 0.
