Yeah, get the Typhoid vaccine, that is one rough disease. Get Hep A / B too. I think Cholera vaccine is also recommended, there have been outbreaks here in recent years.
Nobody I know takes anything for Malaria, and Japanese Encephalitis is very rare (if you get it you are permanently fucked though). Rabies vaccines give you a bit more time/ safety in the case of a bite by a rabid animal, but still need to be backed up by further shots. Tetanus-diphtheria is also recommended if you haven't had one in the past decade.

Thanks for the recommendations Lucky. I live in Ixtapa, a small resort town on the Pacific coast, and can get the Tetanus shot here but my doctor says I need to go Mexico City for the other vaccines. That is an eight and half hour drive from here

one of the hep vaccines (can never remember which) is a course of three: 1 - 1 month later - 6 months later. Maybe there is another way to have that vaccine other than the 'three installments' though. Hopefully, as I think I'd be hard pressed to spend 8.5 hours travelling to get one shot.
