To clarify a few points.
I was intending to purchase, fit out my bike and leave from Melbourne (Oz),
I did the inland route to the top end of Australia 4 years back and there were several stretches of road that had warning signs advising
- No Fuel available for the next 400 - 500 klm's
It's about a 3,000klm trip to the top end and that is why i was looking for a bike with a large fuel tank.
The bike I rode back then had a 28 ltr tank and would give me 530 klms before I had to refuel.
When traveling on the inland route you have to carry spare water and fuel just in case things go tits up.
Therefore a Honda Cub would not cut it in Oz, but would be ok in Asia.
However I was thinking it might be easier to fly to Indonesia and purchase a 175 to 250cc Suziki dirt/road bike and start the trip from there.
I don't want or need a big bike and would consider 400cc to be the top end of what I need.
However the last post about bikes from Indonesia not being able to cross borders without a massive paperwork problem shuts that one down.
OK, I need to better understand the current limitations of moving bikes between countries and plan accordingly or simply purchase and discard a cheap bike when entering and leaving each country.
What Bike can travel this distance ?
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

scoffer, the idea is all very well for most, but fraught with problems for those such as you.

in a nut shell for thailand
Malaysian and Laos tagged bikes can come in for 30 days, easy and can do everything at the border.
all others need the permit and 30 days as i explained,
MY suggestion; fly to Bangkok, phuket or Chiang Mai an buy a bike, tour around, Laos, Cambodia, thailand and head to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and when ur ready to go home, try and sell it or dump it
NOTE ; buying in Thailand u will need to register ur address ( hotel address will do) thru immigration to be able to get the green bike book in ur name so u can cross borders.
when ur ready PM me and i will give u instructions, also look on gt riders.com

The Suzuki DR has a 17 Lr tank, but why has nobody mentioned camel tanks...sorry, I see LS has below...up to 30 (50?) Lr
Yamaha Tenere 600 has a huge tank
Just carry a jerry can or plan your stops, not many places you can go for 300km without a petrol station.
I would go with a Suzuki DR over a Baja/XR
Stroppy Chops has a Honda 650 for sale...

Yes, must have been sleeeeeeping yesterday! But still one one my fav bikes, just so well balanced. Only thing I missed was that Soichiro and hisAE86 wrote:Honda AX-1Dahon wrote:I had a Yamaha AX-1 many years ago.
guys should have bored and/or stroked the bike out to 350cc or so, would have been a godsend at takeoff time. Always felt the bike had to be
revved hard. I guess they wanted to avoid the shaken in the home market. But at leas oil filter was accessible. And they put good front stoppers
on the bike, not a given for that vintage.
Safari Tanks? Ok, the AUD is the not what it once was, perhaps, but 400 or so for a tank? Why not a trailer with decent suspension if cargo capacity
is really an issue? I still maintain the idea that more weight high up on a bike is a bad idea. It will also make the rider more tired since handling will
take more muscle.

^^The NX250 (AX-1) was mean largely for the Japanese market, from what I understand (was a police bike for a long time, some places probably still is) and in Japan there's rarely a need for anything over 250, even for the "fast" roads. I can see where a torquier version would have been nicer though in other countries.

dry weight the bike is under 150kgs
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.
That's the same weight as a very fat barang and his Khmer girlfriend.
