Visiting family in US for Chistmas - multi city stops
Visiting family in US for Chistmas - multi city stops
I'm flying from HCMC to Texas this Xmas, however instead of one straight shot I'd like to see a few new places.
The obvious thing that comes to mind is something like HCMC - Dubai - Berlin or some variation of that. I'm open to less obvious routes as well.
Basically I'm looking for suggestions from those travel veterans who have done this sort of trip before.
I'm a photographer, mostly street fashion and architecture, and I like photographing anything unusual and exotic.

Dallas.
I'm trying to make the trip less painful by breaking it up, as well as seeing some new places.
I'd rather see Beirut than Dubai, but since there's no direct route, looks like it's the difference between a 7 hour flight and and 14 hour one.
My journeys so far have only been in East Asia, so I'm not sure what my best options are here.

Maybe Qatar Airlines to Doha and then OneWorld partner American to the USA/Dallas? Doha's not terribly interesting though.

Yeah Doha isn't real high on my list of places to photograph.
Surely there's some kind of middle ground for what I want? Or is Dubai really my best bet?

I've checked this route online and almost all the routings go across the Pacific via Seoul, Tokyo, etc.
Shanghai and Osaka are possibilities too if you haven't been there.
If you want to stop in Europe, I think the best way to look at this is sorting flights from Saigon to Europe and then separately Europe to Dallas.
Berlin isn't a major long haul airline hub, but Frankfurt and Amsterdam are. You might think about flying into one European city and then taking train and flying to Dallas from another. There are often cheap flights to the USA now from or through Stockholm and Oslo due to competition with discounter Norwegian Airlines.

If you enjoy freezing cold places, you'll certainly love those cities. There are often cheap flights to the USA now from or through Stockholm and Oslo due to competition with discounter Norwegian Airlines.

In your experience Gavinmac, do such tickets end up costing a lot more than a standard one? Around 30% more or...? Many sites offer multiple stops, in your experience, which is the best for that?

I check google flights, kayak, and momondo. Then I always check the airline website also. If the price is close I prefer to book on the airline site. If you book through a discounter it can be a pain in the ass to change/cancel or to select seats.

If money is no issue you could stop over in a major European hub, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Paris - can be pretty photogenic during december. From BKK getting there will be easy, and all have connections to Dallas I think.
Bangkok is also an option, easy to go from HCMC and from BKK there's a lot of flights to the USA. You can also consider Manila, and fly to Los Angeles from there, connecting to Texas. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing or Tokyo might also be interesting. Seoul is also an option.
Cheapest I find during a quick search is one with stops in Guangzhou and Los Angeles. Second is through Taipei.

Usually even in the lowest fare a stopover is allowed, but booking them online through a broker is a real pain in the *ss. Some airlines offer the opportunity on their website, but I usually use a specialized agent. They can check for each flight segment if the booking class of the fare is available on that particular segment, or there's a code share available which can be used with more convenient times for instance.LexusSchmexus wrote:In your experience Gavinmac, do such tickets end up costing a lot more than a standard one? I was going to say Bangkok. It's a huge hub so you can pick and choose your destination. Frankfurt is a big European hub, but boring as hell as far as German cities go.
