Oops.

https://tuoitrenews.vn/news/society/201 ... 45361.html

It should be noted it was an American pilot as well.
A Vietnam Airlines plane carrying more than 200 passengers landed on a runway under construction in an airport in south-central Vietnam on Sunday.

The flight VN 7344, departing from Ho Chi Minh City at 2:00 pm on Sunday, touched down on the runway No.2 at Cam Ranh Airport in Khanh Hoa Province, at 2:53 pm, a Vietnam Airlines representative confirmed later the same day.

The runway is under construction and has yet to be put into use.

And only the USAF can afford to loose/write off so many planes in so short a period in and around such a small area as Khe Sanh.

Only the US Marines can afford to lose so many lives from air logistic LAPES gone wrong at Khe Sanh.

An American pilot flying for Vietnam Airways? Aren't there enough Vietnamese pilots? Thai Airways has a policy of only hiring Thai nationals for pilots - no foreigners allowed. Interesting that Vietnam Airways hires foreign pilots.

I am guessing there are just not enough Vietnamese pilots with the massive expansion that VN Airways is going through. Plus VietJet and Jetstar.

Not stupid if you ask me - every country should give priority to it's citizens by prioritizing them for jobs over foreigners. Vietnam has 91 million people - surely there are enough locals interested in becoming pilots?

Keep in mind however, that Thai Airways used to hire foreign pilots, back in the earlier days such as in the 70s, 80s and possibly into the 90s. Once Thailand became sufficiently developed and had enough pilots of it's own, they stopped hiring foreign pilots. Perhaps once Vietnam has sufficient pilots, they will do the same. However, some Thai airlines like Bangkok Airways and Thai Air Asia still hire foreign pilots.

And if you think Cambodia and Vietnam doesn't have rules on what jobs foreigners can do - think again. As if a barang could work as a cashier or server in a restaurant for example. Barangs are good for being English teachers, managers and business owners, but everyday jobs that anyone with an elementary or high school education can do really should be reserved for locals. Besides, barangs are expensive and need work permits and all. Plus a barang server in a restaurant in Cambodia or Vietnam would look funny. Local diners would all take out their phone cameras, take pictures and post them on Facebook and Instagram.

Nah, don't bother since there isn't any work can't do (i don't know Vietnam). OK, government officials and in army maybe need to have citizenship.

In Thailand you can't build fence your own land without being scared somebody go to tell police etc. that westerner is working and then you are big trouble.
