Nepal hiking and places of interest for scenery
Now in Nepal. Crossed over into Kakarbhitta and now approaching Janakpur.
With regards to trekking does one have to go to Kathmandu to get the TIMS and necessary permits?
Any treks recommended that dont require boots, hiking equipment, guides etc?
Best towns for scenic location , walks etc?
Thanks for any help.
Spitthedog, 41,714 kms and counting.

U can do all the treks in flip flops and have never used a guide.
Try the Lantang/Helumbu trek out of Ktm up to the lakes
BUT at this time of year its going to be COLD and loads of snow
You can rent whatever u need in Thamel
Go spend the night in Nagarkot for fantastic vies of Everest

Walk in to everest base camp from jiri. It will add about 6 days on to the base camp trek but you'll be fit as a mountain goat by the time you get to lukla. As the other tourists get off the plane and wheez there way to namche bazaar you'll cruise by.

I did this in 2016, and I recommend it. Jiri to Lukla is a very nice walk, very few tourists, especially compared to the crowds from Lukla to Base Camp. I barely made it to Kala Patthar even with this advantage of the extra acclimitization and conditioning.the_purple_turtle wrote:Walk in to everest base camp from jiri. I would suggest Annapurna circuit - 3 weeks if starting at Dumre, over Thorang La, 17,800' descend to Pokhara, but weather may screw you this time of year.
Saw crazy French dudes with their mountain bikes on that route.
Haha, do not go trekking in flipflops! but as otr says, gear to rent around Thamel

That was a shock. Very glad I went to these places 30 plus years ago.over the rainbow wrote:no fun, excitement in this trek anymore, as there's a road all the waykinard wrote:I would suggest Annapurna circuit - 3 weeks if starting at Dumre, over Thorang La, 17,800' descend to Pokhara, but weather may screw you this time of year.

Nagarkot is relatively close to Kthmdu and a further 2500' in alt. Worth a look.

FFS, you peddle too fast!
If you don't slow down a bit you will be in Moscow by early February.
I do envy you a bit,
Well a little bit more than "Just a Bit"
Enjoy the ride and keep us updated.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Currently have been cycling in the southern flatlands after entering the border near the Indian town of Panatanki near Siliguri. Easiest border crossing i've ever done. We both cycled past the turning to the Indian immigration and had to be turned back by the guy on the bridge. Did the same on the Nepal side and actually briefly entered Nepal without a check or visa. We coulda been suicide bombers!! Had a friendly chat with the only guy sitting in Nepal immigration and filled in the very simple forms in the otherwise empty building.
The Terai flatlands are abit uninspiring scenery wise to be honest so our little cycling trip will be finishing in Janakpur as want to get to the mountains as quick as possible. Paradise sur Mer to Janakpur.
Avoided cycling through Bihar, India in the end after a Bengali man in a roadside food place said the place and people was so dirty you are better off buying a pack of biscuits than ordering a meal and you should hide your money in your shoe if visiting there. Sounds like it might have gone downhill abit since Lord Buddha was there. Although maybe the Terai here is similar in some ways. Dunno.
Booze seems to be everywhere here. Its everywhere you look. Its like the opposite of NE India where its either banned or hidden in some dark alley somewhere. Is it just me or are Nepali dudes always on the grog? Think its a mountain people thing.
If we are feeling lazy and just want to gaze at the mountains whilst sipping tea and watching people climb Mt Everest on the Discovery channel, what are the best towns for scenery?
Is Nargakot upmarket , or are normal Nepali lodges available? Is it like posh and stuff or an all rounder?
Not sure i'd like having a guide. I'd feel like i'd have to be sociable and shit.
Cheers.
Spitthedog, thinking about upgrading to a low powered motorbike for the Indian and Chinese highways.

Can get a room for $12 a night in Nagarkot.

Gonna do the Poon Hill trek and then hopefully a couple of days in Nagarkot.
Evidently alot of the lodges at higher elevations get locked up at this time of year (winter).

I remember cycling out to the Kali temple one day also. Its a sacrificial temple where goats and other animals get slaughtered as offerings. The setting is quite different to other temples, too.

Can you bring me back some of those fake $13 North Face pants? Damn I wish I'd bought 5 pairs when I went.
