Road trip in Laos or Myanmar
I’m thinking of flying in and renting a car in Laos or Myanmar in May and heading for a weeklong road trip. Any thoughts one way or the other on the better choice and where to go?

Myanmar is quite nice, but you'd have to pick a small area/triangle with just a week in country.

I haven't been to Burma but southern Laos is great. Savannakhet will give you and idea of what Kampot was like 20 years ago. Then drive up to Thakhet another Kampot like town and do the Thakhet Loop through the national park. Lots of waterfalls, caves and amazing views. Loads or roads n towns to explore and places to sleep. Make sure you do Kong Lor valley and the river n cave last at is the best part and quite simply the most beautiful place that I have seen on my travels.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

HOT HOT HOT in May in both.
You could visit some nice places by flying into Mandalay. The ancient cities, Hsipaw
and even down to Bagan with a week

Hot indeed, but we have three days off for King’s bday, and then two more the following week, so it’s a great time of year for a long holiday. Perhaps I’ll just fly to Sri Langka or something, but I was thinking to explore this region more.over the rainbow wrote:HOT HOT HOT in May in both.

Tempting, if I didn’t have to drive back as well. Would probably want to take the SUV though, as not sure about road conditions and so I could explore off the main road. Is it easy to cross into Laos with the car?Barang_doa_slae wrote:Take the fun car and drive up into Laos...

We did both recently. In my opinion you go to Myanmar for the people, not the scenery, although we only did a tiny part of it from the Thai border of Mae Sot down to the beautiful Karen villages around Kawkareik, then down to Yangon and then up to the Tamu/India border where we went through lots of pretty Shin Christian villages and then got on the track/road that passes through jungle and remote farmland for days. Will always remember those sections.
Myanmar is mostly flat , and Laos is very mountainous.
Myanmar is very dusty in comparison to Laos. I guess you are getting more near the dry arid areas as you head west.
We also cycled from the Bo Y border in Laos to Vientiene. That is a nice scenic journey. Particularly liked it as we approached Attapeu. The area around the Bo Y Vietnam/Laos border is very very steep as it cuts through the mountain, and we went through many landslides being cleared on the road with busses stuck in them. But that was the rainy season so maybe not a problem now i think. Laos has a very low population and obviously full of jungle. We camped most of the time and loved doing so. Laos farmers are so laid back. The road from Vientiene all the way up to Boten on the China border is all hills and mountains. Cycled that years ago , and would like to repeat it with maybe a motorbike some time.
So Laos wins for the scenery, but i guess Myanmar wins for the wild west feel abit.
Maybe you've been before and know this already.

Sri Lanka is also a great option. Went earlier this year on a road trip and wished I could have stayed longer. I know you gotta ball, but road trips are always much better on a bike. Way more connected to the land and people.

Went to Bagan two years ago and it was fantastic. Flew into Mandalay from DMK (Air Asia) and then a bus to Bagan.Miguelito wrote:I’m thinking of flying in and renting a car in Laos or Myanmar in May and heading for a weeklong road trip. Last year, did a day trip from Yangon to Golden Rock (another really cool place). Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is another must-visit.
This year, I'd like to try riding the train from Mandalay over the Goteik Viaduct. Supposed to be amazing.
