I did not my homework b4 comming to Phnom Penh, in regards that a Thai tourist visa will be difficult to obtain nowadays, so what are the options to get to VTE by bus, I do not need it to do in 1-2 days, I'm rather willing to put in a overnight or two.
Once in VTE I'm like on my home turf, from there I know my ways around.
Bus travel Phnom Penh to Vientiane not going through Thailand.
A long time ago I did: PP-Stung Treng, cross border to Pakse then onto Vientienne.

^ This is the only way, but to do in one day impossible I reckon as the border isn't 24 hours, two days of hard travelling by bus, ouch!
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Sounds like torture to me. There's a direct Vietnam Airlines flight from Phnom Penh to Vientiane, that would be my choice.

WTF? The flight is 90 minutes and $200.
What reason to spend days on buses instead of a flight? That’s madness

The reason is that you get to see places, stop at Kratie, Pakse, Savannakhet, Tha Kaek.
Only the time-poor can't afford leisurely travel.

I wouldn't mind a bus if it's a decent one and if the travel time is somewhat reasonable. Phnom Penh to HCMC, for example, I consider doable by bus.
THAT route though - you're pretty much guaranteed shitty buses (or more minivans for some stretches), hassle and delays. And it's just a freaking long way.
I could see that, taking a bus 6-7 hours and enjoying the area before taking another bus the next day and repeating that process for a few days. Those bus rides would be taxing though.
I was more picturing 12 hour ride to middle of nowhere, passing out from exhaustion and taking another 10+ hour ride. No thanks

I stopped for a few days at each of the places I mentioned. Had some serendipitous experiences. Buses were fine, rides about 4 hours except Kratie - Pakse (should have broken it).Alex wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 11:53 amI wouldn't mind a bus if it's a decent one and if the travel time is somewhat reasonable. PNH-HCMC this month took 8 hours. Traffic doesn't get better. But I got the chance to see what has happened to Bavet - looks like central PNH now. Enormous condos even on the Viet side. Shopping malls...
As to buses, for short hops in rural areas I prefer the small local variety. Open windows (for photography) no aircon or movies/ktv. And you meet the locals. But they are a bit of an effort because they invariably arrive/leave from bus stations outside towns.
Agree with this. Buses are not ideal, but for me better than being on a plane or at an airport.GMJS-440 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 7:53 pm

Car, motorbike, bicycle all better in terms of freedom and opportunity to experience the country. But require more effort.
You're an inspiration! That's something I could imagine doing once I'm retired.
