Slavedog's Grand Tour of Cambodia, 2020.
Slavedog's Grand Tour of Cambodia, 2020.
No summering in England this year for obvious reasons.
So I've had the idea of a grand tour of Cambodia during the summer holidays.
So far the idea is to start with a couple of days with the outlaws in Kampong Cham. A few days in Siem Reap, then Battambong.
The bit I'm interested in your ideas for is the bit between Kampong Cham and Siem Reap. I'm embarrassed to admin that I haven't made it past Memot in all these years.
So what would be a good plan? Is it possible to go Kampong Cham, and then do a kind of loop that could take in Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, Preah Vahear, before finishing in Siem Reap?
Any advice for a route, and/or places to visit and stay would be appreciated.

The idea of taraboat and jared going out for a jaunt together on a boat is nice to imagine. It would be like a modern day ‘The Odd Couple’.

Have you seen the Chenla ( pre Angkorian )Prei Kuk temples at Sambour and what about Beng Melea temple that would be awesome now without all the Chinese.

You can hit Koh Ker and Beng Melea on the way from Preah Vihear to Siem Reap.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
That sounds excellent, Cob. I'll give you a shout when we know some dates, looking around second week in July I would imagine.

Thanks Horace and Lucan, those look like good suggestions.

From Kampong Cham I would head up and spend a few nights by Kracheh, in search of river dolphins. There's the nice Palais de Chhlong about 45 mins south or the town, or a nice resort on the island in front of the town.
You can then come back down 7 to Snuol, and turn onto 76 to Mondulkiri. Spend a few nights in Sen Monouom where you can do a nice hike one day with a guide, see some elephants, and check out some waterfalls. There are even a few places in turn to gets beers at in the evening (a few meaning, like, two), or just brings beers to the top of the hill for sunset.
From there continue on 76 up to Ratanakiri, staying in Ban Lung. This is an excellent road to drive. There are more waterfalls around, and the big crater lake.
From Ban Lung you'll take 78 to 7, turning right into Stung Treng. Not much there, but perhaps worth a night and taking a boat tour.
You then take 64 to Preah Vihear, and onward to Siem Reap, past Kulen.

Is it worth staying a night or two in Preah Vahear?

the tarantula girls between k.cham and pp you have no doubt seen.
sipping coconut beside the river watching the boats go along the mekong when watching the sun go down in kratie is probably my most pleasant experience.

I'm probably not the one to ask, but it doesn't sound like there's much there.slavedog wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 3:06 pmThat sounds like a solid basic plan, thanks.Miguelito wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 2:49 pmFrom Kampong Cham I would head up and spend a few nights by Kracheh, in search of river dolphins. There's a hash run twice a year in Stung Treng, perhaps you could meet up with the local hasher there.

I was massively disappointed with Preah Vihear and the town itself is shit , just a few restaurants and expensive but crap hotels. Beng Melea was amazing, so was Koh Ker, in fact, I had koh Ker all to myself coz I arrived before the ticket office opened and the guard said it was okay to go in.
