I haven't been there for a long while, but the locals usually used to day trip and spend the day there hanging out and eating crab and other seafood before heading home. Has that changed significantly now with locals spending time (and money) in the restaurants and guesthouses?

That is still true, but when I was down in the beach/ crab area a couple of weeks back most of those places seemed dormant. The crab scene is a bit worn out anyway, the stocks have been decimated and the crabs look dismally small.
Kep is a beautiful little province, I love that coast road and the steep forests nearby.

I'm not surprised that they have been overfished. I wonder if this year will allow the crab stocks to replenish.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 12:01 amThat is still true, but when I was down in the beach/ crab area a couple of weeks back most of those places seemed dormant. over fished?
All the crabs are raised there in pots right off shore. They have been small for years as the locals would rather sell as soon as they can, rather than allow them to grow.
According to gf sister who lives there and is involved in land sales, things are slower than last year but still prices go up and on weekends and holidays its more crowded this year than last

Was my chart informative, at least?Guest wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:19 pmផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:42 pmAs yet unclear.Guest wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:29 pmCould someone confirm if Kep is busy during the week but quiet at weekends?
Has Felgerkarb’s analysis helped you any, or are the waters still muddy?

Not so much, if you could produce a, trump style, colourful bar chart breaking down visitors by day of week that would be a game changer.Miguelito wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 9:27 amWas my chart informative, at least?Guest wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:19 pmផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 1:42 pmAs yet unclear.Guest wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 12:29 pmCould someone confirm if Kep is busy during the week but quiet at weekends?

If I understand correctly, then weekdays may be slightly less busy than weekends. But I’m guessing here.

I didn’t know that, but am not surprised to hear it. How do they train them to tie up their pinchers with the little blue elastic bands though? Those crabs must be bloody stupid.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 8:33 amover fished?

This article from 2011 says they are caught with nets and also says they were suffering from over-fishing even then:Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 8:33 amover fished?

https://www.phnompenhpost.com/post-plus ... s-trip-kep“There are no crabs around here as the water is only two metres deep, where we catch the crabs is six metres deep,” he says. “In the afternoon we spend two or three hours spreading the nets and then we sleep. We start collecting crabs at 11pm.”
The amount of crabs they catch each night is literally written on the wind.
“If the wind is strong we catch around 20kg per day, if the wind is not so strong we will catch only 10kg a day,” he says. “The best time to catch crabs is from June to October.”
One of the problems the fishermen face is over-fishing which is driving the fleet of boats further away from land. Ses Koeun attributes the depletion of the crab stock to the use of more modern fishing tools.
This more recent one from 2016 discusses over-fishing too, it also shows them using traps.
https://www.phnompenhpost.com/post-week ... ling-catchWhat do you think is the reason behind dwindling fish yields?
It’s a mixture of habitat destruction, overfishing and illegal and destructive fishing.

Yes, they do not raise or farm crabs here. The technology to do that is advanced and relatively new, it's certainly not just putting crabs in a pot and letting them grow.
The fact that they also prize pregnant females doesn't help the population either.

Wait until after next week to go..
That is obvious.
It will be packed next week because of the New Year holiday replacement.
The following week Khmer people will be saving for Pchum Ben next month.
Siem Reap is busy decorating the city for Khmer tourists to visit this weekend and next week.. Hotels are reporting over 90% occupancy. There are package deals for hotel and meals and the party atmosphere should be festive.
A brief respite for the industry here.
Go to Kep after the 23rd...

As everyone expected, Kep was crazy busy last week. I didn't see too much of it as I figured it was better to just stay and drink by the pool, but I did see them stopping cars all the way up on the main road (near the sailing club entrance) and collecting tickets there. The seafood prices went way up (especially crab). Finishing one lunch at the sailing club, the place was pretty full already, and then about 20-30 young Chinese rolled up. I never bothered to go the market area or beach, but was told that road was so backed up it took about 45 minutes to make it that 1 km.
See my post in the "what did you have for dinner last night" thread.
Now THAT is some $erious crab gouging.
