Pol Pot's Secret Bunker
Pol Pot's Secret Bunker
A hell of a find, the dictator who was responsible for over 2 million deaths last refuge in the mountains. In beautiful jungle it was a really surreal experience.

The ever-entertaining Mr B always has some conjecture or speculation in all of his videos. he certainly never presents anything in this as a stone-cold fact. no need to complain. Perhaps your clearly superior expertise could fill in the gaps?

Perhaps. I wouldn’t speculate, fluff and bullshit about thing I don’t know though.tombraider wrote: ↑Sun May 16, 2021 7:45 pmThe ever-entertaining Mr B always has some conjecture or speculation in all of his videos. he certainly never presents anything in this as a stone-cold fact. no need to complain. I do like the videos though but there is a little too much ‘artistic license’ involved sometimes IMHO

I really like his videos and enthusiasm, but I find some of his commentary really annoying as he doesn't really know much about the subjects. For example, he does temple tours and doesn't seem to understand what laterite or sandstone are, or which parts are obviously modern concrete repairs.
Cambodian history is a very complex subject, and when he starts on about the Khemar Rouge it just gets annoying. He really doesn't know what he's talking about. In this latest video he basically repeats this really common trope that's big on the internet these days. Here it is:
He says the Khamer Rouge started because of US bombing of Cambodia and goes on to blame the CIA etc. The presence of perhaps 100,000 PAVN and NLF troops in neutral Cambodia is never mentioned, he mentions the Ho Chi Minh Trail but not the Sihanouk Trail. He doesn't mention important points such as the Samlot Rebellion, or more importantly the Kampuchean Communists sudden taking up of arms against the government in January 1969, before any extensive US bombing such as in Operation Menu. The later Operation Freedom Deal was another Nixon/Kissinger initiative which has become very unpopular abroad due to its perhaps excessive nature - but then people forget what was happening on the ground at the time. It was the only thing delaying the Communist takeover.
Pol Pot had already purged all the royalists and Hanoi Khmer elements and started collectivization by 1973, and a whole lot of people didn't like that. It's estimated that at the time of the Communist's final takeover in late April 1975 that only 20% of the population were in their "liberated" zones. The rest had already fled to the cities. And in the cities they had no problem with Phantoms and B52s raining hell on the revolutionary army approaching their enclaves.
So there's no context after that, he just goes for the "Year Zero", "Agrarian Society" and "Kill anyone with glasses" cliches. He does however describe quite well the paranoid system which ended up in so many massacres.
I hope he keeps making these videos, they are complex subjects and I know he can't be expected to explain everything in 5 minutes but he could do a bit more research too.

1. He doesn't and has never done tours ever
2. He's an enthusiast I don't think he ever purports to say he know everything. A lot is conjecture
3. I appreciate that this video is outside of the temple realm he usually does where every day is a learning so with pol pot where much is known perhaps the wrong approach . Not everyone is as studied as you LL but also I agree no need for false narratives
4. Just appreciate a man who brings a sense of humour and visualisation of temples many are unaware of
Take care readers. And smelly fart I meant no offence x

I thought the vid was particularly good for what he set out to do.
Find pol pit bunker.
Give a insight into its geographic location.
The vid, unlike some on this thread, is not pretentious about chronologies and historical facts.
It shows how the location afforded a lookout and escape route.
Much like a rats nest.

tombraider absolute no offense taken.
I do watch most of the videos as they are well shot and he presents with an enthusiasm I could never muster. Nearly every video has a cringe, 'did he just say that?' moment but I just thought this one had a few more than normal.

Good grief, it’s a tourist attraction, he isn’t quite Scott of the Antarctic.Whinger too wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 6:28 amI thought the vid was particularly good for what he set out to do.

I do really enjoy his videos and he's funny. And I'm kind of jealous as I haven't been outside this poxy city for months.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
There’s a few long termers who should all get together and write a book - LL, Felgerchrist, “Ray”, OML etc.
Before they croak it. (Especially if they’ve ever been in the same room as Laud John)

Felger and OML are not in Cambodia. I haven't been here so long really.
