Handing resumes in to the factory schools
Handing resumes in to the factory schools
Been doling out CV's to around a dozen factory schools today all within about a 20 min walk from where i live as i am hoping to save on tuk tuk fees if i can find a job. Anyway these schools all have stupid names and seem more to me as a way to make money more than anything else. Maybe its the culture difference or what not but it was weird as fuck handing in my resumes to some of the offices. A couple of them stared at me like i was Gary Glitter or something. We'll see how it goes.

Things work differently in Cambodia. Time is definitely relative; it goes much slower here.
How are you dressed? Are you giving your CV to someone in upper management, or just a receptionist? Is your picture on the upper right corner?
Re-read the threads you earlier posted on, and read the advice given. Follow the links, and do your own searches for the many many posts about teaching here. Get out and network with other teachers. There is a wealth of good info out there, but it's not going to be quick and easy to get, just like anything "good" in Cambodia.
Imho, the market is over-saturated with un/under qualified foreign teachers. Even many long-timers are having difficulties finding and keeping good teaching jobs.

I was dressed well in business attire. I didnt see any white people in any of the places i went to. Just gave my resumes into reception. I had professional passport type photos attached to the resumes. A couple of the schools kind of gave me the creeps. They just seemed all about getting money. Anyway its a waiting game now i suppose.

You do realise these schools are for profit enterprises?Corkman42 wrote:A couple of the schools kind of gave me the creeps. They just seemed all about getting money.
Are you willing to work for free or are you all about the money too?
Just an update on this. I've handed in about 15 CV's to schools and am also networking with a couple of guys who are handing my info into their contacts. In 2 weeks i have heard zilch so far. Not one phone call. I know things work a bit slower here but i thought i would have at least 1 interview lined up by now. I'm not being choosy either. I'll happily work for 700 a month or even less right now just to get my foot in the door. I'm going to do another school run on Monday morning. Have around 7 or 8 schools picked out. Will see what happens. If i don't get a job within the next 2 weeks then i will probably have to head back home. Its a shame. I was hoping to last 6 months to a year out here but can't see it happening the way things are going.
You need to muscle your way in to hand your CV to the director of studies.

Help me out here:
1. You posted on March 21 that you were planning to arrive in Cambodia with about $3,000
2. You posted on April 15 that you had arrived and been in town about a week
3. you posted on April 27 that you had just dropped off a dozen CVs "today"
4. Now it's May 5 and you're ready to give up, saying, "I was hoping to last 6 months to a year out here but can't see it happening the way things are going."
I guess my questions are:
1. If you are looking for a job so urgently, why did you wait three weeks between arriving and dropping off CVs?
2. What do you mean you were hoping to last 6-12 months, is this not a permanent move? Applying for jobs that you secretly plan to leave in six months is kind of a dick move.

I am hoping to stay here for the foreseeable future if i can make enough money to live. 6 months is probably an oversight on my part. I would have no problem signing a one year contract with a school and seeing it out and possibly renewing/extending it if it was the right fit.
I think more people from Cork should teach English.
I love the idea of lots of little kids who later become successful business people running around with that comedic accent.

Are you super old? I hear that can be a problem when looking for teaching jobs.Corkman42 wrote:I am hoping to stay here for the foreseeable future if i can make enough money to live. 6 months is probably an oversight on my part. That "comedic" accent got me laid by a few girls way out of my league back in the day. Not Cork girls though. Doesn't work on them.

I'm guessing he blew a lot of money on the drinking, drugs and women during the three weeks between his arrival in Phnom Penh and the day he finally got around to dropping off his CV at schools.Corkman42 wrote: In 2 weeks i have heard zilch so far.
