Where to start becoming an English Teacher
I've come to Cambodia to Teach English. I did my research on the internet but I figured being here I would garner authentic understanding. I've been here for a week having a good time but I think it's time to get down to business. Just renewed my Visa for 6 months so next step is a forum post. Expats tell me this is the Khmer forum is 'da bomb'
So I've got a few questions:
1. Any experience to share with TESOL/TEFL/CELTA schools? I'm thinking one with a guaranteed job would be good but I suspect it'd be a scam.
I'm tempted by this one but I'm a bit suspicious http://ninjateacher.com/teach-english-cambodia/
2. If no experience with schools just a bit of hearsay would be appreciated.
3. Is there a bar where the English Teachers hang out?
4. Anything else you think I should know?
Appreciate any input.
Thanks.

3. Try the bars on St172 - the cheaper the Beer in the bar, the more likely there are TEFL Jobbers there.

Everything that I know about TEFLing probably became outdated in 2013 or so, but there was a school called Language Corp that did a decent job of getting graduates hired. The last I heard, the owner had become incapacitated due to a motorcycle accident, so I have no idea if it still operates or not. You can also apply through their parent company, Language Corp, which is based in the US, so you won't be completed scammed. If it still exists, check it out.

I was tempted by this one but the online-only course was a bit of a turnoff. I like learning in classrooms. Did you do this one?
Apply at a teacher training college back home and get a degree? That's how I started.....

Same goes for Home of English or Pannasastra, they'll take any riff-raff.pedros wrote:Turn up in a shirt and tie at ELT. Same day start.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

As an aside, I see PUC's campus near Wat Botum has been closed and the building is for rent.Lucky Lucan wrote:Same goes for Home of English or Pannasastra, they'll take any riff-raff.pedros wrote:Turn up in a shirt and tie at ELT. Same day start.

On behalf of Home of English International, we don't accept riff raff, I don't know where Lucan gets his information, and I have no clue why he wishes to slander us as I've only been friendly to him. For the record, we only accept people with experience and relevant credentials. Not only that but all applicants must teach a demo class to demonstrate competent teaching abilities. I hope that clears things up.

Do you require a criminal record check?Michael_Ekans wrote:On behalf of Home of English we do not hire riff raff of any sort. We hire teachers that have relevant experience and qualifications in teaching. That is only after we have observe them teach a demo class. Regardless of credentials and experience if the demo class is unsatisfactory we will not hire them. Also Mr. Lucky Lucan I would prefer if you refrain from making uninformed assumptions about our school in which you have never worked.

^asking that question of one school in isolation gives a skewed insight. Why not go poll all schools of interest and report back findings?

I reckon that is slightly more time consuming and a bit of a hassle.violet wrote:^asking that question of one school in isolation gives a skewed insight. Why not go poll all schools of interest and report back findings?
Knowing the practices of one school can still be useful.
