Golf courses

Been a while since I had a hit of golf in Phnom Penh. Last time I played the 2 options were the yawny (I mean YAWNy) lawn of the Royal Cambodia (who had also sacked their entire experienced caddy staff for striking) and the not-so-much better Cambodia Golf & Country course.

I've heard there are new courses in Phnom Penh. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Anyone played them...opinions?

Can we pull together a a couple of groups amongst the 440 membership for a social game?

I've only played the two that you mentioned. The only other options I know of are in Siem Reap. I'd be up for some friendly matches, but I need to spend a bit of time at the driving range and the putting green first.

Eventually I will return to Cambodia and be in a position to provide the information you seek. In the meantime the two facilities that have recently opened in Phnom Penh are as follows;

City Golf - 9 hole par 3 course, driving range and pitching area.

Grand Phnom Penh - Jack Nicklaus Design, 9 holes open, the over 9 to open early 2011.

In the meantime, this may help you;

There are links to maps on this page, I will update shortly with course contact information and further photographs.

Kind regards.

Huh? I dont understand.... do you mean there are 9 holes and they are all par 3's? That's.... stupid.

Is that in the area known as "Toul Songay".. at the back of Toul Kok? Is it the place that is surrounded by massive golf netting?

I was taken there today on the assumption I was being taken to a new golf course.. I was excited to say the least. However so disappointed when I saw what I thought was just a massive outdoor driving range. I was confused because the place had 3 different entrances so the land area seemed quite large. It would make sense if this was all Par 3 holes.

I had a a VERY confusing conversation about this today. My brother in law told me it was "open". He then told me that they hadn't dug the holes in the greens yet, which I took to mean it wasn't open. He then told me that people are playing on it already, and you can go and play on it, you just cant sink the ball because they havent sunk the holes.

Needless to say I gave up on this conversation and resolved to go and check it out for myself tomorrow.

Thanks for the FB link.

Paul and Shizzle... how about we get our golf on Fri 10? Anyone else in?

That is what I am led to believe. Quite a good idea really. An ideal opportunity to practice your short game/iron play - especially if you haven't played for a while. Even Augusta has a 9 hole par 3 course.

I presume so, check the google map for Phnom Penh on the facebook page I listed.

Now that is very bizarre, something I had never heard of before. Please report back, and I would be interested to know what they are charging for green fees/caddies/buggies etc.

Kind regards.

I went into Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club today to check out the situation.

They have completed their first 9 holes - ready to play.

The back 9 is still under construction.. the first 3 holes have been completed (but greens haven't had a hole sunk yet) and the entire back 9 is due for completion in April 2011.

The course is EXCLUSIVELY for members only. If you don't have a membership, you cannot play.

Guests of MEMBERS can play. The prices for guests who are playing with a member are as follows;

Weekdays - First 9 holes - $45
- Additional 9 holes - $23

Weekends/Public holidays - First 9 holes - $55
- Additional 9 holes - $28

They have some special prices for guests of MEMBERS
Pchum Penh, Bon Om Tuek, and Khmer New year - $45 for 3 days play
Sometimes they have Ladies Day, Juniors Day, and Seniors Day - $20

In addition to these green fees the following fees apply to guests and MEMBERS;
Caddy $10
Cart $20
and a mysterious (??? yet to find out what this means) "monthly dues fee" of $80

So... you want a memberships... well.. they only sell LIFE memberships... no annual memberships. They are $40K a pop. Currently selling with a 20% discount for $32K.

There are a limited amount of memberships available... only 850 will be sold. Theyve sold 71 already.

Members will also get 15% discount at everything Naga, and will get discounts on any house pruchased at Grand Phnom Penh.

Whilst they say that llife memberships are limited, and that the course is exclusively available for LIFE members and their guests only, Im sure this wil lchange once al their memberships are sold.

Until then, unless you have a membership, if you ant to play in Phnom Penh, its the crap courses for you.

Thanks for posting the information Doctor Seuss, I am disheartened by the news.

Looks like you will have to wait a few more years to have general access to a decent course in Phnom Pehn. I can't see Sir Nick Faldo being involved in a project that will become 'Members Only', it goes against his principles of promoting golf at the grass-root level. The Vattanac Golf Resort to open in 3 years;

In the meantime, a trip to Siem Reap seems the only sensible option to get access to good golf courses in Cambodia.

Regards.

Whilst I was in the marketing office there were two Japanese guys that had just signed up for life memberships and walking out with a nice bag of welcome goodies...

Highly elitist.

Still... I suspect this may be normal operating procedure for a new start up golf course. Im sure once they sell all their memberships they will want more money and will eventually open it up to the general public.

I think keeping it exclusive is just a way to get a big fat wad of cash in fast ($27 million), to pay for the costs of building the course. Hopefully wont last forever.

this is true, you'll always have life members. Hope they do open it up to others eventually

Well, me and Paul Jordaan caught up for a couple of rounds. Awesome guy. Thanks Paul.

Had a round at Royal Cambodia. The course was in absolute disgraceful condition and I can't imagine I will ever go back... it was that bad.

We also played another round at Cambodia Golf & Country - very nice. Course in tip top condition.

Despite reservations about letting a stranger see my crap game, turned out to be a lot of fun. Anyone else ever up for a game of golf - let it be known!

Thanks for the pm Dr Seuss.

I have just found a video on YouTube for Cambodia Golf & Country Club -

Maybe the music will bring back fond memories of those 18 foot putts you were knocking in from everywhere :D
