How would you be able to board a plane in the first place if you had no passport?

Thanks for the replies.

I was just curious because when I submitted my expedited passport order today, the post office woman said she was "very skeptical" that I'd be getting my passport. My birth certificate was torn in half (it's perforated down the middle..) and taped with clear tape. Also, I had to use an identifying witness (waiting on ID back from DMV) and she said I didn't "prove much identity". I gave social security card, my bank card, bank check, car registration and an old bill.....

I hope everything goes OK.

without a passport ur fucked>>>>

I had one stolen in India ages ago and had no documentation to prove who I was. Went to the us embassy and they wired to US to confrim i was an American, Next day went back and they told me they had no record of me being an American. what the fuck????

She told me I had to get two people to come to the embassy to verify they had seen my Passport ( yea, its 1973 and i showed my passport to everyone) anyway got two people to lie and got my us passport. Then went to get an exit visa BUT they needed proof ( ie Bakshesh) that i was in India legally.
I had had enough and refused to pay so for the next 6 months everyday went to the foreingers reginol registration office and had tea and cakes and waited for an hour before they said, not today!!! Finally they, i guess, gave in and i got my exit stamp

Good luck going anywhere outside your own country without a passport!!!

I had a very similar experience when my passport was stolen in Varanasi. a very long and interesting story and a life-changing event.

Anyway, is there any connection between this OP's odd question and this one:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17595
now everyone can be denied to fly at the checkin
?

Seems to me that since the relauch, the majority of new posters are asking questions like these, or 'Is Cambodia a safe place to come to get stoned and teach English?'(or film them). Is K440 being targeted by criminals or what? Has K440 placed an advert in the Lagos Herald or something?

BirdBrain,

That was very un-called for. I clearly outlined why I asked the question. My flight is the 25th and the post office lady suggested I would NOT be getting my passport due to the conditions, again, outlined above.

According to Google, plenty of people have gotten passports with damaged birth certificates (my Virginia state one is perforated down the middle - so, naturally it tore in half). Also she suggested I provided "very little" proof of identity.

Your comment was very misdirected and uncalled for.

Zasp, let me apologize for some of the cynical replies to your question. Many of our posters are experienced travelers who think that everyone knows that you can't check in for an international flight or board an international flight without a passport. However, this is not common knowledge to many people who have never taken an international flight before.

Why was your ID at the DMV when you applied for your passport? There are passport expediting services in Washington D.C. that can get you a new passport in 1-3 days (with correct documentation) but they may charge $200+ for this service.

I recall you were asking about naturalization in another thread. What made you decide to get a passport and permanently move to Cambodia sight unseen? Most Americans start traveling internationally by vacationing in Europe or the Caribbean, they don't jump off the deep end and move to Cambodia.

Hi,

My ID is awaiting return from the DMV because I needed to fill out for a new one. This takes month+, however, I do not have the time for that with the flight being the 25th. The naturalization question was one more for knowledge than practical use. :)

I did use a passport expediting service (VisaHQ) and really hope everything goes OK. If not, back to the drawing board!

I apologize for my newbie questions. I've never flown internationally before, only domestically (no passport).

Is this a holiday? Can you change your flight date under the circumstances, like you have no travel documents. Just a thought??

I have actually done this, on purpose.

In 1991 I flew from San Diego USA to Vancouver Canada for a friends wedding. That was my one and only trip to Canada. The Canadian immigration lady was quite perplexed that I had a passport and had left it at home on purpose. I was very used to going to Mexico and returning without the need to carry my passport and had read Canada was the same for US citizens. The immigration officer said that was true for land crossings, but not for air travel. We chatted a bit and deciding I was likely harmless she let me pass and enter Canada warning me I was likely to have some trouble with US immigration when I returned.

A few days later I played twenty questions with an equally perplexed US immigration officer. Who after quizzing me about my personal details (what was the name of my elementary school) and recent travel next proceeded to give me a citizenship test. His last question was what are the three branches of the US government? (legislative, executive, and judicial)

In the post 9/11 world I doubt I could repeat this.
