Its a shame you can't buy air rifles here. A couple of months ago a relation caught a big rat in a cage type trap. He was trying to kill it with a piece of wire and it was squealing like crazy. I recommended throwing the cage in a bucket of water but he wasn't going for that. I tried killing it with a screwdriver, the fucking thing was going crazy and spurting blood but it wouldn't die, so he just walked across the main road and threw the half dead thing into a ditch.

i agree.... a crossman 760 pump action pellet gun would be great. not so sure about arming the local youths.
spraying with bleach now. see what happens.

Hanky that's fucked- your right (good) air rifles should be available for the problem- killing mammals (especially as large as P.P rats) is horrid without the right tools- if you can cage the animal i suggest using exhaust fumes-makes them sleepy and dead.

I used to keep a lot of aviary birds when I was much younger. Mice were a problem as they'd eat food and eggs and likely spread illnesses. We couldn't use spring traps or poison in the aviaries as they might kill the birds, so we got some cage traps. These were left open on one side with bait in them for a day or two, then the lid was put on, it had a funnel shaped gauze entrance. You would find up to 12 mice trapped in it. Usually we'd drown them in a bucket of water but I let one bunch go free in McDonald's bathroom.

I found a shotgun and a small terrier does the trick, we got hundreds one afternoon a few years back.

Locals tend to protect their fields by stretching a plastic sheet around the periphery to keep them out after checking the paddy bunds to make sure you've got no rat holes. Not much else you can do other than hunt 'em.long in the tooth wrote:i have a problem with rats on my farm. i have tried rat traps and poison but nothing is working. these are rice field rats and i understand

Offer payment for every rat caught, you'll need to find a way of turning all these rats into money so it becomes a self financing business. Then sell the business to a local so they can make money and you get rid of your rats.
Yes the people will bring in all the rats from the outlying properties which is why it needs to be a profitable enterprise. Not sure about the health aspects but you could turn them into pet food for the west.

Wouldn't drowning them just bloat them all up? Either way that's kinda disgusting. On a serious note, would it be ok to bring a bb gun in my suitcase next time I come over? That would be kinda cool.
But the best is the cat solution. So much simpler and less time consuming than hunting. Get 1-3 cats depending on the size of your farm and let them roam around. They are pretty low-maintenance and their smell alone will probably ward off some rats and they'll hunt the rest for you. I had a cat in a restaurant and it was probably the only one on the street which didn't have any rats.

Sorry ChoyMai that was in the UK. I still have a shotgun, wonder what the process would be in getting it over to Cambo? probably enough guns without bringing over more!ChoyMai wrote:Where do I get a shotgun please???Typhoon wrote:I found a shotgun and a small terrier does the trick, we got hundreds one afternoon a few years back.
Drowning isn't a very nice way to do it but it works and saves a lot of bloodshed and squealing. its over quickly and they don't bloat up. they just look like...a drowned rat.Bitteeinbit wrote:Wouldn't drowning them just bloat them all up?
I think a cat is the best idea keep it happy and it'll work hard.

get some pythons - non-venomous, no more rats. Or rat snakes. If you have rats on the farm, pretty good chance you have cobras/ other snakes there already, just get more.
