Ob-Gyn at Royal Rattanak
Ob-Gyn at Royal Rattanak
I'm on need of a competent western (or at least western-trained) ob-gynie. Royal Rattanak's website is no more so can't check to see who is there.
Any recommendations?

I think that rattanak is fine, they are thai trained not western trained.
The other option is the sen sok hospital which has some western specialists.
A mates wife had a serious problem with rattanak and she had had two babies at a khmer place in st 306 with a really good khmer doctor.

The yellow pages do not list the names of the physicians on staff at Royal Rattanak!! which is what I am after as I need a gynecologist with specific expertise (not related to delivery or pregnancy0. As their website is no more, i can't check out qualifications there as used to be the case.
So maybe let me rephrase the question: can anyone give me the names of ob-gyns at Royal rattanak? As with the name I can then google to get an idea if qualifications and areas of clinical interest fit what I need. Thanks.

But you could call them. They could give you the names, you could google them.

For a ob/gyn checkup in Phnom Penh, go to Dr. Scott at Traveller's Medical clinic -- he's good, but a bit old fashioned, or SOS International where I think the woman who does this is called Laura.Scully wrote:I'm on need of a competent western (or at least western-trained) ob-gynie. If you need any sort of specific specialty care, you're much better off in Bangkok. Royal Rattanak is expensive and Dr. Scott told me enough horror stories to scare me off from the place. It's where I'd go in a middle-of-the-night emergency, but not for care that I could go to Bangkok for.
If you are planning to give birth to a child in Cambodia I wouldn't go to Royal Rattanak. Don't trust someone blindly because the say they are “Thai-trained” or they “have western doctors”. My wife went there once being pregnant in the 8th month. She had a strong pain in her abdomen during the night. Because they had their emergency number and advertisements for their gynaecologists plastered over all newspapers we believed at that time that Royal Rattanak was the place to go in such a case.
Guess what? They did an ultrasound and came to the conclusion that it was indeed a serious situation that demanded immediate and decisive action ….
…. and called a taxi to bring my wife to Calmette Hospital...
Of course they wouldn't let her go unless she paid the the bill of 280 USD. In the end our son was born at Calmette by Caesarean during an emergency operation. It was just a waste of money and precious time.
Besides, I wouldn't entrust the life of my newborn to someone who doesn't manage to pay the bill for his domain in time:
“This account has been suspended.
Either the domain has been overused, or the reseller ran out of resources. “
In case of an emergency I would go straight to Calmette. A lot of forum members will cry foul but according to my knowledge Calmette is the only hospital that has an operation room that is on standby 24 hours and has incubators at ready.
I don't know about Sen Sok though.

Dr Scott's clinic is the place to go if you have the clap but he doesn't know a thing about obstetrics and openly admits it. Furthermore, he lacks the necessary equipment. And he doesn't even try to hide how much he dislikes children.giblet wrote:For a ob/gyn checkup in Phnom Penh, go to Dr. Scott at Traveller's Medical clinic -- he's good, but a bit old fashioned, or SOS International where I think the woman who does this is called Laura.
Dr. Scott is indeed not an Ob-Gyn and not an appropriate referral for ob-gyn matters.
I am a health professional myself and would strongly advise anyone against Calmette for any purpose. In event of an obstetric emergency (e.g. requiring c-section) the best options IMO would be wither the National Maternal Child Hospital (AKA "Japanese Hospital") or the Visal Sak Clinic, Dr. Soeun (older Cambodian obstretrician trained pre-KR era. Did c-section on my niece.)If the emergency is likely to eresult in a premature birth, then only the NMCH, with medevac to Bangkok as soon as posisble after that for propoer NICU care.
However my problem is ntot in any way pregnancy related. The Rattanak website is back up so I was fially able to check out the gynies there. Based on that I've made initial appointment with Dr. Laura at SOS and will see how that goes. I am well aware of the limitations of the Cambodian healthy system and if definitive treatment proves needed will certainly get it in Bangkok, but there are in initial diagnostic measures that need to happen first and before I can get to Thailand.

It's where they bring emergencies from the any of the private maternity clinics around town.Old_major wrote:

That sucks, paying loads for complete bullshit.Of course they wouldn't let her go unless she paid the the bill of 280 USD.
Who Gives a Fuck?
Sully,
thanks for your advice. I couldn't find the Visal Sak Clinic neither on Google nor in the yellow pages. Could you give me their details? Not that it matters, since the boy is walking around by now … just for the record.
