Need a preschool for my daughter
Hello, first post here. My family will be making the jump over from Taiwan to Cambodia next August, probably for a two-year stay or so. At that time, we'll have a four-year old who'll need a preschool. She speaks both English and Mandarin, and learning Khmer isn't necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good preschool? Also, is it standard procedure to hire a nanny that accompanies the child to the preschool? We were in PP for a month last year and enrolled our little monkey at Gecko Garden for their winter vacation program. All of the other kids there had nannies with them, and it seemed to be expected.
On another note, where should we inquire about finding a nanny? We also have a younger child that will need looking after.
I really appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Yeah, we were taken aback that each kid had their own... assistant, and I was a little POed that my monkey fell down and scraped her knee...and no one bothered to patch her up or comfort her, seemingly because that was the nanny's job.

Hello, Janadaren. A bit of advice, if that's okay. It's really cute that you refer to your daughter as "my little monkey". I once said to my mate's baby daughter: "Oooh, you are a cheeky little monkey" and I was quickly urged not to refer to her in such terms - most 'insults' in SE Asia are animal related. The remark was, of course, made in all good fun, but to the Cambodian mother, it would have been the height of bad manners, so my mate warned me not to say such a thing again.
Good luck to you in your search!

O, let me not be mad, not mad, sweet heaven
No worries.
We've been coming to PP for years on very short stints for business, but we've never had to arrange more long-term stuff before, so I'd love to hear from more parents about how they arrange things.

And if your staff keep undercooking the bloody burgers, you will never have either... although in all fairness, one crap one and 10 fan-fecking-tastic garageburgers, is a good score.. I will definately be back for anotherjm wrote:Ain't got no nanny. Or helicopter.

But you, you called someone else's Cambodian kid a monkey? What is wrong with you? I have no social skills and even I know not to that.

Agreed. In my experience, locals find monkey references to be hilarious.horace wrote:I call my students lazy monkeys all the time, it has never upset anyone, in fact it seems to have the opposite effect.

My wife is checking out Chinese preschools (if they exist) and I'm checking out the English ones.

I think there's a Chinese pre-school off St. 51/63 near Sihanouk.
Check camhr.com and bongthom.com, they advertised for staff there. You might want to do an inspection of any school before you enroll your kid, especially canteen/ toilet areas.

The yahoo group cambodian parents network is good for school advice and household staff etc.
Awesome, thanks everyone. You've given me a few leads and a new place to check out information. I raise my glass to you!
