horribly boring visa and passport question
My U.S passport expires in 3 and a half months. My current 6 month visa expires in 3 days.
I went today to get another 6 month visa thinking it would carry over into the new passport I plan on getting before the expiration date.
They said I cant do that. Fair enough.
So I asked for a 3 month visa extension. They said they cant do that either even though it fits within the passports expiration date.
Does anyone know about this?
I can get a one month visa at a time and deal with getting a new U.S passport. But I dont want to pay the ridiculous amounts for the one month extension(s).
Main question: Any information on why I cant get a 3 month extension?

DW, I think the rule is your passport has to have at least 6 months left on it for them to give you a 3/6 month visa. Pay for the month and get your new passport/ extra pages asap.

This is correct. I'm surprised they will even give you a one month extension.vladimir wrote:DW, I think the rule is your passport has to have at least 6 months left on it for them to give you a 3/6 month visa. Pay for the month and get your new passport/ extra pages asap.
Sounds like BS to me.
I was in the same situation (but with a EU passport) and I travelled around for a couple of months with both (the valid visa in the expired passport and the new passport). Where did you ask?
Just saw Buscador's post. You sure?

make sure u ask for the extra page book as extra pages are now $82 ( although they will give u two sets the first time)
Hate to ask but why did u wait???

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Im going to get a one month visa and go to the embassy next week and work out the passport. I'll ask for the extra pages and all. This is my first passport renewal ever, so i simply thought if the passport expires in february, ill renew it in january. and if the visa expires in a few days, ill get it renewed.
Now I know for the future.

Vlad and Buscador are correct, the 6 month rule has applied for at least 20 years in many a country.SunSan wrote:Sounds like BS to me.

Uncle Monty, Vlad and Buscador are correct, sort it out dude, or prepare to go to jail soon. Don't get too bothered, they won't rape your ass or anything, but they'll get you to pay above the normal visa rates. Motherfucker.Uncle Monty wrote:

I found this out the hard way. Tried to book a ticket to Bangkok and the travel agency refused to do it because I had less than 6 months left on my passport. Had to go through all kinds of hassles to get it sorted out. Apparently the ruling is so that tourists/ barangs don't get stranded/ overstay and end up without a valid passport, normally they pick it up before 6 months (at least in Thailand).

I don't mean the 6 month rule. I know that.
In my case they stuck the visa in a valid passport, that was invalidated by my embassy when I got a new one. The visa was still valid though despite being in a passport with the corners cut off and 'invalid' stamped on every page (but the one containing the visa).

So again thanks everyone for the help. Especially to Hanky for ensuring I probably wouldnt get raped. Very comforting, LOL. Although the new passport was 110dollars, so thats a bit of raping.
So I filled out all the shitty little forms online, printed off the appointment. Walked through the door with no queue.
Walked up to the reception lady. Turned in my application. Had everything right in order and felt proud of myself, until she said she couldnt accept my photo because the background color was light blue, and not white or off white.
I walked down to monivong, got the white background pics, took em back to the embassy, paid the dough, got the extra pages, walked around on the grass outside a little bit, its always nice to find grass in the city and walk around on it. And that was it, so if you got to do that same shit, and need some advice, PM me and ill walk you through it.
Hanky is also an excellent source of great information, if Im not available.

SunSan, are you sure that at the time you had the visa ISSUED, your passport already had less than 6 months validity left? In my case, I had a 6 month visa issued when I had 10 months left on my passport. However, 5 months later I got a new passport because I could not get into Thailand with a passport that had less than 6 months validity. Until my old Cambodian visa expired, I had to carry both the new passport and the old expired one, just as you did.
No, bad info on my part. My passport still had a couple of years on it, so the valid visa stayed in the invalid passport.Buscador wrote:SunSan, are you sure that at the time you had the visa ISSUED, your passport already had less than 6 months validity left? Sorry for confuse.
So, if I were to apply for a new American passport while here in Cambodia and get it, would they transfer my old/valid Cambodian visa to the new one, or leave any sort of note about it in the new one?
