I know the guy but wasn't aware that he ever posted here. He's a lunatic, which helps a lot if you want to live in Poipet.Devo wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I was questioned by two drunk cops off road in Poipet. They asked me to empty my pockets and what I pulled was a couple hundred bahts, some riels, rugged passport so they let me go. My motorbike driver told me I was very happy, indeed, one cop was holding onto his gun case, I guess trying to get a gun and another tried to calm down his college while questioning moto driver and looking through my belongings. I don't need to say I was very scared and all wild thoughts ran through my head.
Also I was robbed once of CD player, it was somewhere in 2004 or 5, just right off the traffic circles damn children surrounded me and started to ambush me. A lot of people around and no help, I pushed them away and got finally to the taxi drivers. Again it was a long time ago and crossing the border after dark.
I've heard of Poipet long times as Wild West and its main dusty street with new guesthouses and slums had some of touch as The Great Whore of The East, some almost biblical contradictions between wretched of the earth and dirt rich. I wouldn't live there, though, there's nothing to do except gambling and no sightseeing too.

I never thought of it as the Great Whore of the East. That could be Shanghai.
Poipet is a corrupt, dirty, dusty little town with some casinos, a brothel street and packs of feral dogs. That's all.

Shanghai, yes. I've never been there but Poipet struck me with its atmosphere.

You answered the knock AND opened the door? Serious courage.Karong wrote:Well, if you have a healthy yamma/ice habit, enjoy banging skanks of all ages and want to stroll around desserted and bloody dodgy dark streets at night - go ahead and live there.Cambobound wrote:Looking for the inside scoop on Poipet as a place of residence; not just a pass through.
Please spare me the obvious one-liners about how much of a hole Poipet is; looking for actual information from people who have spent time there, specifically: what the surrounding countryside is like, what kind of houses (not apartments) you can rent, the expat community there, markets, daily life etc...
Thanks in advance.
But seriously mate, if you are not a troll - give it a miss yeah.
And I am speaking from experience. One night I got wasted in Poipet and missed the border closing times. I had no choice but to stay there for the night. After numerous offers of yamma and teenage girls on the way to a hotel, I was glad to be somewhere where I could rest my head for the night.
Wrong! I get a knock on the door late at night. When I open it about four khmer punks barge pass me and just start going through my room. Then they sit on my bed. Feeling a tad vulnerable to say the least I quickly opened up my shoulder bag and emptied the contents on the bed. Inside was a couple cans of beer and a shit mp3 player.
After offering these gentlemen a beer, they politely declined and left the room. That was my first thought of defense - show them that I had nothing of real value.
1st and last night in Poipish for me!

Seriously, I don't think the word 'good' should be mentioned on the same page as Poipet. They should rename the place Toi-let. I would rather live in Iran. It's a living disgrace to Cambodia, and the worst advert for it after Pol Pot.Its only redeeming quality is that there is a road out of it.

From experience Poipet is a place you want to spend as little amount of time as possible in. On no account cross the border into Cambodia in the evening as you will be stuck in Poipet with no where to go. Please stay in Aranyaprathet on the Thai side, its a lot safer.
In 2007 I made this mistake, after crossing the border after 8.00pm the first impression of Poipet reminded me of an apocalyptic scene from Mad Max, no streets lights, mega dirty roads, hundreds of locals milling around. Intense paranoia is guaranteed if that's the sort of thing you like. A guide (I think) took me by tuc tuc (followed by an entourage of mopeds, how nice!) to a crappy hotel up the road which charged 900 baht for the night. Like Karang I was offered women but declined, instead I was introduced to a rather camp teenage boy, this I also declined. My only companion for night was a beetle the size of a fist, quietly relaxing on my bed.
Leaving Poipet very early the next day was the greatest feeling I've ever had.

Actually when I woke up the next day the beetle had disappeared, I believe it had been eaten by one of those miniature crocodiles that walk across the wall.
900THB? Where did they take you?
The best place in Poipet, apart fromthe casino hotels, is the Orkidee. 450THB for the best rooms.
I used to stay at a Heng something guest house whenever I had to overnight there, 150THB. Bed, ensuite bathroom, TV, air con.

It's also much nicer. I actually quite like Aranyaprathet. For a border town it's quite nice! The people seem really friendly and the guesthouses are reasonably priced. I generally overnight there if I go overland.mostcurious wrote:From experience Poipet is a place you want to spend as little amount of time as possible in. I have to say that I actually like poipet. last time I stayed there for the night instead of aran. just taking a seat at that guesthouse gh/supermarket right at the circle and having a beer was very entertaining. I saw a guy who cycled from holand to bali and was about to cross the border. we sat together chatted and just watched the chaos there. Then I took a walk around the street that runs next to the main street up to the market. Man, that area was alive. Haven´t seen that many people on the street in such a small area in cambodia. Never felt unsafe walking around town but certainly understand that bordertowns are not for everybody. What I also like about poipet is that it still is very raw while the rest of cambodia is changing to something else that doesnt feel like the cambodia that I first visited.
Nothing to say against that, just like the old feeling from time to time.
