Will I get robbed?
Will I get robbed?
Walking around Phnom penh at day or night with an expensive camera taking photos, will I get robbed?
Would hiring a guide/companion be a good way to lower the risk?

Why don't you ask one of the hundreds of people walking around Phnom Penh at day or night with expensive cameras taking photos?Photoboy wrote:Walking around Phnom penh at day or night with an expensive camera taking photos, will I get robbed?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

you will definitely attract unwanted attention but the risk of being robbed or beaten up in daytime is very low so there's no reason to hire a "stringer" or being scared.Photoboy wrote:Walking around Phnom penh at day or night with an expensive camera taking photos, will I get robbed?

the only thing you must carefully avoid is taking snaps of prostitutes and hostess bars, do it at your own risk as people will turn nasty, no matter if you use a 500mm zoom, they will see you and they will come to you and nobody will move a finger to help, you've been warned !
The last person I saw with "an expensive camera" was very lucky that the ambulance arrived in time....Photoboy wrote:Walking around Phnom penh at day or night with an expensive camera taking photos, will I get robbed?

One of our Sunday night dinner attendees showed up with a $4,000+ camera. And that was at night time. Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

Dont worry about useing a 500 mm zoom, it's even more dangerous if you are using a macro lens doing closeups of those prostitutes.
I am just a nobody
But one day I will be a somebody really important
And you all will be wanting to shake my hand
and say
Hey you, you are my friend.

No, probably not, but stay in areas where there are other people and don't wander around alone at night looking touristy. I wander around alone at night and nothing happens to me but I don't have a camera around my neck and I know where I'm going. Here's the trick to not looking like a tourist, but it's almost impossible to do and end up anywhere you want to be if you actually are a tourist: Keep your gaze level, don't slowly examine each storefront or sign as you pass it, don't linger in front of each restaurant to check the menu, don't pause anywhere unless there's a good reason. Look like you know where you are, where you are headed to, and you're in a hurry to get there. If none of those things are true, faking it can mean getting lost or hit by a car or something I imagine, so maybe it's best to just act like what you are and stick to places with other people present.
One thing to watch for: Drive by snatching. They wiz by on a moto, yank it out of your hands or even from around your neck. That's been tried on me while I was riding in a tuk-tuk, two guys on a moto, they pull up just behind like where a car's blindspot would be, then accelerate to pull level and guy on the back stands up basically and reaches over to grab the phone or whatever. I didn't really notice them pulling up, absorbed as I was with the beauty of my smartphone, but I have strong hands and a lot more leverage than a guy on a careening moto.
Bear in mind: That happened like once in the span of a year.
EDIT: If somebody does mug you - maybe they approach you with a weapon or there's a few of them - unless you are Charles Bronson or something, just hand it over. What's worse than being mugged? Being mugged and spending the rest of your trip in the hospital in a country not world renowned for having high quality free of charge medical care. If you lose everything, get a hold of somebody back home (your hotel or guesthouse will likely help you do that unless you stayed somewhere really questionable) and have them Western Union you some money so you can sort it all out without starving.
