No visa issuance with a one-way ticket.
Hi Guys,
first time poster here.
I recently read that if one tries to enter Cambodia on a one-way flight (i.e. non-return ticket), certain airlines will not allow you to board and enter the country. This sounds very odd indeed.
Has anybody heard of this before?

Hi, and welcome to K440.
Your question and issue has been raised and discussed several times, so let me find the links to the threads and get back to you in a jiffy!
EDIT: Here are good info and explanation on the "one-way ticket" issue. (and I suck at this search thing... I'm pretty sure there were other threads in which I chipped in and I can't find them...)

This is not a specifically Cambodia thing, its mostly that the airlines face costs if they fly someone who doesn't meet minimum entry criteria, they have to pony up the return costs.
Generally not an issue, but worth ensuring you have your i's dotted and t's crossed

Thanks for the heads-up Joon and johnnyj. Will have to think of a way around this rather irksome policy...

Flew in on a one-way ticket just this past Saturday; not an issue. I guess it always depends on the check-in staff.

Hi Hanno,
Expect you already had a visa in your passport, given that you live here, which removes the risk for the airline.

Wrong as I only gave them my new passport and my visa is in my old passport which they could not have known.1984 wrote:Hi Hanno,

Arrived at airport check in , have previous Cambodian visas but would not let me board the plane without a forwarding flight and cited ' immigration requirements ' , had my previous passport full of same , no go she said .. They sold me an ongoing flight to Vietnam , fully refundable , took 3 months to get my money back .
Get yourself an on-line visa to circumvent the hastle at the airport , the problem is NOT at Phnom Penh because they need us !!!

I'm guessing that you could, just show the e-visa to the airline staff to get on the plane but when you arrive go to the visa line and get an ordinary visa. You'd end up paying twice though.johnnyj wrote:On that note, if I get a tourist e-visa, can I still get an ordinary on arrival?
You don't need to pay $35 though for an e-visa to fake out the airline staff. When they ask how long you will be staying in Cambodia, tell them two weeks or some duration under 30 days. If they then ask if you have an onward ticket, say yes, and act confident and tell them you have an onward flight on a specific date on a specific different airline. That will probably be good enough for the agent to drop the matter.
If they still press you for an onward ticket, just show them any kind of itinerary showing the onward flight within 30 days on another airline, or a refundable ticket, or a printout of a ticket you bought and immediately cancelled within the 24 hour grace period that some airlines allow.

Air India are notorious for this. Plus there is always thousands of Indians trying to put the whole world each onto the plane, so you don't have time normally to do anything about it. All you need to do is find an onward flight , go through the procedures for booking it as normal. Just print the itinerary out. You don't need to pay. Show this if they ask for confirmation of onward travel.
I actually got caught out last time I flew from the UK as I forgot. The situation was as above at Heathrow with Indian A. When I finally got to check in, there was no time to go to a comp and print an itinerary. Cost me UK100 to change the flight to the next day. When I turned up the next day, they never even asked to see it! Complete Fuckers of the first order.
Yes a remote possibility that the airline will have to pay and we all know what Indians are like with money.
So: always print an onward itinerary if your booking a single ticket to a non citizenship country that is within the allowed visa on arrival/issued visa dates, just to be sure. Not sure if a smart phone booking screen would do, but probably.
Indian Airlines is , if I remember, the only one to do this (twice so far with me). Sounds like Cathay may be staring it too. Were they bought out recently?
Better be safe than sorry though.
Never had a problem with a visa on arrival because of it, or buying one at the embassy before I go. They aren't interested. It's a bit like the destination address on the arrival card no one gives a Fk . Just the airline coz of money they 'might' have to pay.

China Eastern Air wouldn't let me board at LAX on a one way to Phnom Penh via Shanghai. At the check in, the lady asked for my onward ticket. Looked at it and then compared the flights numbers with the AirAsia flights in some big 3 ring binder. I found a round trip to Kuala Lumpur for 70$ for 28 days after I landed in Phnom Penh, so I just had that in hand, thankfully, or I might have missed my flight.
The year before, same airport ( LAX) with EVA Air via Taipei to Bangkok, I was asked how long I planned to stay in Thailand. I said 28 days. Nothing else, able to fly with a 1 way ticket.
It is up to the airline because as other's have said, they are liable for costs of your return. I don't know if fines are involved, but people's jobs certainly are if there are any problems.
I actually ended up taking the 7 day trip to Malaysia, so all worked out great. At worst, I was out $70.
