Ahh, this is what I'm thinking. Thanks!LexusSchmexus wrote:Sraa soh is what I believe you're referring to. Just regular rice wine. They sometimes combine it with fruits/bark for slightly different tastes and effects (some being "medicinal").
Is Mekong Whiskey safe to drink?

It comes in the plastics bags right? My g/f just calls it Khmer Whiskey. But I can see it being rice wine.MekongMouse wrote:Ahh, this is what I'm thinking. The places I've bought it from serve it to me in re-used water bottles. I can't remember ever getting it in plastic bags, but considering all the other drinks that come in plastic bags, wouldn't be surprising.ThePeck wrote:It comes in the plastics bags right? I have not seen any Mekong around for ages, not that I have been looking for it.
Is it still available ?

"We, the sons of John Company, have arrived"
It was never safe to drink,
But I can recall several nights of drinking that led to unimaginable experiences with members of the opposite sex.
What was the name of the Rum that was also sold at the same time.
( It was as rough as sawdust on your tonsils )
Mind you, this was 25+ years ago.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Mekhong whiskey is still available. I saw it in Big C in Bangkok a cpl months ago. Its not as cheap as it used to be.
I have drunk what we call srai whisky many times in Kampong Cham and Siem Reap....It is not a retail product.
people die from improper distillation.
I think I read you must distill 2 times before it is safe to consume.
Doing shots a few months ago with my Khmer friend was quite fun...until I had to tell the tuk tuk guy how to find my place outside the paved roads in the pitch black...

It was actually mid-afternoon and not dark. You just thought so because you were hammered beyond all recognition and temporarily blind from methanol poisoning. By the way, that wasn't a tuktuk... the cops brought you home.
Mekong whiskey and Mekhong whiskey are different. Mekong whiskey used to be like 10k Riel a bottle or something, really terrible stuff. It was discontinued several years ago.

One is Thai and there is another with a similar name here. There are cheap and nasty brands like Super Whisky and there are stills that produce Sra Saw or rice wine, this can become very toxic depending on the mix. It's a long time since I hung around the local hooches drinking palm juice but that stuff gets potent after a while.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

None but ourselves can free our mind.
