Convert tourist visa to ordinary visa
Entered on a tourist visa by mistake...before I realised it was too late to change at the airport counter.
So, I have 1 week remaining before the visa expires - is it possible to convert to an ordinary visa on renewal, or will I have to do a border run? From Phnom Penh, what is the fastest, cheapest overland border run?

Technically it cannot be converted in country, but I'm sure with enough tea money that it could be Probably cheaper and easier to do it the legal way and do a border run.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

yes one wonders why this required border run nonsense has persisted for so long. surely they have paid off the airport debt by now
I can't remember how expensive but the travel agent on the Riverside sorted this one. Your passport goes to Vietnam without you. Took a few days.

That's quite illegal and a disaster waiting to happen.GMJS-440 wrote:I can't remember how expensive but the travel agent on the Riverside sorted this one. Your passport goes to Vietnam without you. Took a few days.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
Obviously your passport crossing borders without you is illegal and the thought of trusting the agency with your passport is quite unnerving. That being said the travel agents do it frequently.gavinmac wrote:That's quite illegal and a disaster waiting to happen.GMJS-440 wrote:I can't remember how expensive but the travel agent on the Riverside sorted this one. My numerous reports to the police about this illegal activity have so far gone nowhere.

It was $120, to convert via this method, circa 2012.GMJS-440 wrote:Obviously your passport crossing borders without you is illegal and the thought of trusting the agency with your passport is quite unnerving. Not sure why you would report it to the police? Do you report jay walkers and illegally parked vehicles also?
^ Very odd recommending a service then saying he's reported this service to the police!

Thanks for all the input received so far. I looked into the illegal 'visa conversion' service and was quoted $195, plus the regular cost of the ordinary visa, per person. The process takes two weeks, so overstay fees would also apply.
As a family of three, the least painful option for us is a day run to the Vietnam border and back by private taxi ($110), VN visas ($42 each), plus the cost of the ordinary visas
I know visas are free in Thailand but I just can't face the prospect of crossing at Poipet with a three year old. Apparently the issue of ordinary visas at the Koh Kong border is uncertain, so that's out.

Are you sure you need a Vietnam visa, Lara? Quite a few nationalities don't anymore effective a couple of months ago. At least that applies to the better countries. But perhaps you're Australian or something.

But don't hold it against me - I keep my thong-and-wife-beater-wearing to a minimum!
