My wife recently lost her job in Phnom Penh, and we have decided to move out of Cambodia. Our rental property is $600/month, and we have a $1200 deposit. The lease does not end until August.
What is the best way to approach our landlord to avoid losing our $1200 upon leaving early? We are planning to move out in 2-3 months.
How can I break my lease early without losing my deposit?

Tell him, and offer him to assist in finding new tenant.
Find a replacement long term tenant to move in as you move out. The landlord should then be OK with returning your deposit.
Find someone to move in to give the owner continuity of rental earnings. Only a real shitty LL will still keep the deposit.

I like your logic, but I'm guessing the OP has assets back home he needs to protect.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Thanks for all your responses and comic relief, ha. Just wanted to update you all - the landlord will indeed return the deposit if we can find someone to move in.
If you get close and still have not found someone.....offer a cash incentive to rent the place.
Say......$300. This means their rent for the first 3 months is actually $500.
Better than leaving empty handed 1
