Cost of lawyer?
Cost of lawyer?
Hey guys, I'm wondering what the cost of a lawyer for someone (khmer) that has been imprisoned (in Sihanoukville) for possession of illegal drugs might be?
Long story:
Met a girl in Sihanoukville in 2013 and we "hung out" for a few months. I got to know her quite well and as far as I could tell she was not the kind of person to take drugs, heck, she didn't even drink alcohol. But she had some friends that did seem a bit "off" to me, didn't really meet them that much but they just gave me bad vibes. Anyway, I went back to my home country and we stayed in touch for a while, until I decided it was for the best for both of us to just get on with our lives, so I blocked all calls from +855. About a year and a half later she calls me (I had just got a new phone and forgot to block calls from Cambodia on it), and by some weird "hunch" I thought "Alright, I'd better answer, this could be important". And it turns out my hunch was right - she was in Sihanoukville prison. According to her, she had a big fight with one of her friends over some money , and her "friend" got angry and set her up by planting drugs in her room (I know, could be totally made up BS, and I'm still not sure what to believe. With friends like that, who needs enemies, right?).
So now she's been in prison since february 2015. She asked for some money, so I sent her 400 USD on Western Union (via the police, so who knows how much was left after they were kind enough to collect it for her...). I also went to visit her a couple of days in june 2015 when I was in Thailand - it was an "experience" to say the least... I had already decided I would do what I could to help her out, within reason, so I gave her 1000 USD cash in person for a lawyer. I have to admit, I thought 1000 USD sounded like quite a lot for a lawyer in Cambodia, but thought "What the heck, she'll need some money when she gets out anyway". So she met with the lawyer in september 2015, but it turns out she didn't get out of prison. She tells me the lawyer cheated her - I have no idea what happened in court, might just as well be that the lawyer did what he could but the court decided she was guilty... On the other hand, she tells me she didn't get a proper sentence yet.
So now she asks me for money for a lawyer again. This time she's asking for 2000 USD, including money to help her father who has become sick and is now in the hospital (I met her parents back in 2013, and they seemed really old and not very healthy, so this might just be true). 2000 USD just seems like a ridiculous amount of money in Cambodia - and if the last lawyer "cheated her", what are the odds of the money being actually getting her out of prison this time? However, according to http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm? ... id=2424255 there is a shortage of lawyers in Cambodia, so maybe 1000-2000 USD is not unreasonable?

Send her USD 10,000... in a few weeks she'll be back for more.
She never was in jail.

Exactly the answers I was expecting
Sure, I could just walk away. But it's only money - yes, 2000 USD is a lot of money to me too, but I'll get by without it. For her it *could* make a big difference. I guess *could* is the key word here, since I have absolutely no idea that it will help her at all or not, and that's what I'm trying to figure out. For all I know 200 USD might do just as much good for her as 2000 USD.
If someone has any info about the actual cost of a lawyer then at least I would know if 2000 USD is ridiculous or not.

I would contact Sciaronni and Associates. You will pay a pretty penny for a consultation and to have their staff look into the situation. Then, you will likely have some idea of where you stand. Right now....you are just wading deeper and deeper into a mud pit.

Don't do that -- first off, that is not what that firm does, and secondly, she's Khmer in SHV so would be hiring a Khmer lawyer from SHV, not one of the priciest Phnom Penh firms geared towards foreigners.LoneStar wrote:I would contact Sciaronni and Associates. Hiring a Khmer lawyer in SHV and getting second hand information is a great way to wind up getting screwed. I believe Sciaronni would do that work....I could be wrong.....but IMO, you need a western atty. that can make sense of what is going on. Paying a small premium now for good legal advice could save you thousands later.
