Moving from Thailand
Moving from Thailand
As my introduction, I am Dan who has been in Thai for 12 years. I speak fluent Thai and am age 43, self employed online for many years.
I enjoy being single and don't see myself getting married. One advantage I have over my fellow expats is my Thai fluency and age.
Unfortunately, the visa laws here are getting expensive and inconvenient for long stayers under age 50. I would like to try life in PP, although I have never been.
My 2 passions are meeting non hookers and casual cycling as my main means of transport. While many expats here wouldn't dare cycling, citing the dangers, I do it every day for the last 12 years. Day and night. Not a scratch on the bike or I.
I also use Badoo to meet women and there's heaps of Thais using this. Some are hookers. Some not.
Is it possible to buy an inexpensive bike in PP ($100)? Are dating sites popular? Which do you recommend? Free or paid membership? Thank you.

yes many have this thought but they will find out that this is not a nice and cozy place to live. You will probably say oh what is this guy negative. But I will just tell you my point of view. First of all riding a bicycle in PP? where do you want to ride it? even in Diamond Island the motos will cut you from all sides, you will breath in more fine dust than you could ever imagine.
I would say ride a rental bicycle on a "nice" friday evening around town and you will be cured soon. Especially the riverside is nice..
hundreds of motos with zero respect for you and regularly dump and cement trucks with old engines who want the absolute shortest way to Diamond Island.. nice to ride behind them..
also where are you going to stay? Rent some alley room for 500 dollars a month? Everyday you will have to tell the motos and tuk tuk drivers that you don't need their service since you have your own bike, but they will keep asking and pestering you anway. If you made it past them smiling and no no thank you'in.. you have to walk hundred meter trough a dark alley and stepping over old bags with rubbish, rats and cockroaches before you can even reach your frontdoor..
sometimes as a bonus there is some drunk local pissing against your frontdoor or just next to it..
yes here you can't say anything to them.. "you will be so wrong" Any local around that place will tell that you were wrong and not him.. you are just a Barang.. and he was only drunk. and his friends always buy the food from "our restaurant" so he wins you loose. yes this is how these people think.. Not all of them but many of them!
The rental prices are crazy here. For the money you will spend here you can live in a nice bungalow/villa in Thailand.
One Tip* if you managed to find a cheap and good room, come back at around 12 at night and do the entrance walk again.. see how it is.. you could be lucky..
I hope you can keep us posted here how your experiences are. Don't forget in Thailand you are treated very well and correct since you speak the language. All that respect will be gone the first day you start to live here and especially if you are not a customer somewhere. if you don't bring any advantage for them you will see how nice the people are here...
ofcourse there are people that live happily here but they have either a family or have nice people around them and don't go out of that circle. A lot of dreamers and people who just don't "see it" as well.

Come over and visit for a few weeks/months before you make a final decision to move permanently. ...you'll either love it or hate it.
P.S. Not all apartments are located down dark alleys with drunks pissing on your door

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

I agree with this, except I think many of the guys forced out of Thailand for financial reasons can't afford to visit Cambodia for a week for a reconnaissance mission while simultaneously renting a place in Thailand. That's why we get so many posts along these lines.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Come over and visit for a few weeks/months before you make a final decision to move permanently.
You may want to read this article before you decide: http://www.khmer440.com/k/2013/07/7-rea ... -cambodia/

Wow, haven't seen such a collection of negativity since good ol' splinter graced the board with his observations of our sad behaviour. Looks almost like ClubBar is trying to keep Thai expatriates from coming here and "spoiling" this place.
To the OP, Cambodia is fine, if you learned Thai you'll find it much easier to learn Khmer than if you started from scratch. Costs are more expensive in Cambodia than Thailand in general, but not hugely so and as always what you can live on is entirely up to you and your tastes and resources. You'll find the dating scene much less advanced than Thailand as Cambodia is a number of years behind in that regard, but there are those who seem to have managed to locate something similar here. As per PSD_Kiwi, the best thing you can do is come over and check it out to see whether you like it or not. I doubt you'll enjoy bicycling as much though.

Thank you for your replies.
People here in Thailand always crap on cycling so I'm used to that. I always have The Ramones blasting in my headphones so even if someone wants to sell me something, I can't hear them
We have taxi drivers and touts of all kinds here too. I can't hear them with my headphones on and they see my bicycle so they don't bother.
I'm 43 years old. I realize I'm young but have already lived in Thai full time for 12 years.
The long stay Thai education visa is expensive and more hoops to jump through.

Why would someone be worried about spoiling what is widely considered one of the worst cities in the world? Phnom Penh is an absolute dump on so many levels that it's hardly even worth discussing.Jacked Camry wrote:Looks almost like ClubBar is trying to keep Thai expatriates from coming here and "spoiling" this place.

There are lots of cheap bicycle stores just south of O'Russey market, near the Capitol Guesthouse.dancambo wrote: Is it possible to buy an inexpensive bike in PP ($100)?

did u participate in the "bike for dad" event in Dec? Thousands of Thais around the country cycling
Thai's in the past 3-4 years have seriously taken on cycling for fun and enjoyment,
I live in Phuket and there are various bike clubs and the hash even has a section for mtn bikers.
I know some thais that have very nice ( ie read expensive) bikes- ur a serous biker and u want a bike for $100?

It's not polite to shout "TROLL!" at newbies just because you disagree with them. Face it, the vast majority of Thais and Cambodians have no interest in riding a bicycle, wouldn't want to be seen riding a bicycle, and perceive bicycle riders as lower in class than car riders and motorcycle riders.

5 years ago, maybe
now no way, cycling had made it to the growing middle class

dancambo, you are going to regret moving.
The bureaucrat monster has awoken here, and soon Scambodia will be just like Thailand, if not worse.
Add the shitty infrastructure and political uncertainty (but you're used to that).
Stay there.

With all due respect that's a bunch of nonsense. I've ridden around the city for years. The only accidents I had were a couple of times riding into submerged potholes and one time when I stopped to drink rice wine with a couple of soldiers I knew, about 100 meters from where I lived. I crashed about 10 times going home (into the ground), and those guys would laugh about it every time I saw them. I never drank rice wine again.ClubBar wrote:yes many have this thought but they will find out that this is not a nice and cozy place to live. You will probably say oh what is this guy negative.
