That sounds so much like English. Which language is it?merchantsmutual wrote:Compare the way Cravath treats clients with how the local struggling solo does.

Ok, thank you. I guess coming from New York City, you're so used to everyone having these tiny niches and/or one or two big clients that they mine.scobienz wrote:Nothing too high end. Real estate transactions. Due diligence. Cambodian legal aspects relating to transactions - Labour law aspects of a M&A deal. Like I said a lot of the wok comes from international firms who want a Cambodia legal perspective on a major deal.merchantsmutual wrote:I'm not a PQE or whatever the British equivalent. I'm licensed in New York state and its federal courts and do commercial litigation.scobienz wrote:As gavinmac says you wouldn't appear in Cambodian courts. Only Cambodian lawyers can do that. But you would be working in the background, drafting legal opinions and documents and advising on a range of legal issues, including disputes. The firms here are regularly used by the big global firms for Cambodian legal opinions, for example, and they prefer to deal with westerners.
With 5 years PQE you would be snapped up and likely to earn anything from $3000-$700 a month, depending on which firm you ended in.
You'd be daft to think of teaching English until you have exhausted law firm options. Approach them. I guarantee they will want to talk to you; as it's a relatively low paid market and given the regulatory challenges, there is a real shortage of western law firm talent here.
What types of transactional work are we talking about? Complex stuff like private equity or simple stuff like leases and loans? Title work? Why would a firm be interested in a lawyer whose only real transactional experience is negotiating and drafting settlement agreements/stipulations of settlements/releases in litigation?
There are no real specialists here. The market isn't big enough. Everyone is a generalist.
I don't know how many more times I can say this - your experience would be of interest to 4-5 of the biggest firms in town immediately, at least to the point of them wanting to talk to you.
Don't even consider teaching until you have approached those firms.
This is all good to hear, too, because I hate teaching. I was thinking of trying to figure out how to do some work remotely.
If you need help with identifying who to approach in which firm let me know. I can also put you in touch with lawyers with your level of experience who are working in these firms. They might be worth talking to regarding their experiences.

I used a number of expat lawyers here and most are great and very friendly. I perfer to keep it informal and usually meet them at Rose Bar, its brief visit.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
Teaching at $1,000 a month is easy, even with no credentials (No TEFL cert and no B.A and no experience), but you might have to "exaggerate" your experiences a bit.
With at least a TEFL cert, you can start $1,200 working 20 hours a week, 5 hours a day. Most of them top out at around $1,400 a month working those same hours.
The downside is that those jobs are usually hourly, and Cambodia has a ridiculous amount of holidays, so you will rarely be making the full amount.
If you want a salaried teaching job that pays $1,300 and up, then you'll need some credentials, as you'll be working with a real international school.
Or you could just fuck all that noise and try to rock out a legal gig like everyone else said.
Actually, are legal credentials verified by showing documents or word of mouth? Just wondering.

A lawyer TEFLer, the vlad paradox!
I do wonder what law firms Scobie and you lot would recommend, mostly out of curiosity if it is in line with my thoughts. Actually, I think I have more I would recommend avoiding as opposed to recommend using.

I hope if Scobienz gets the OP a job interview for a lawyer position in Cambodia he doesn't continue his "Why on earth would a local law firm hire me I can't even draft simple documents" routine.

I wouldn't recommend any firm; instead I would recommend individual lawyers from different firms depending on what was needed.GMJS-440 wrote:

He would like a job that pays him $1000 that does not require that he draft any simple documents.scobienz wrote:I wouldn't recommend any firm; instead I would recommend individual lawyers from different firms depending on what was needed.
