I was sceptical about the land clearances expecting new developments, but as of yet no building has taken place on the cleared land & the riverside walk is one of the few places in town that has changed for the better.

That's a shame, I went there with a now-deceased friend in 99, and with my parents a few years later. Last time I went was with my sister in 2007. There were stories about prisoners being thrown into those pits in the bad old days of the mid to late 70s, but what would I know - I was only a kid then.

The crocodile business in Cambodia is bad because the quality of the skins is not good enough. None of the big fashion houses want to buy the product here.

What's the main reason? The variety of croc, the maintaining them so they don't get scarred up, the treatment of the skins...?Hanno wrote:The crocodile business in Cambodia is bad because the quality of the skins is not good enough. None of the big fashion houses want to buy the product here.

Alligators. (pussy version of crocodiles)Phuket2006 wrote:when i was a kid we used to all go to Florida for spring break from dc/new york., back then lots of shops sold small crocs and lots of people brought them for the kids
as they got bigger and no longer cool, they were flushed down the toilet and thats how new york sewers got full of crocs.

The latter two. The crocs are often kept in tiny cages, piled on top of each other. The slightest nick in the leather, especially the more expensive part from the belly and it will be useless for "haute couture".Jacked Camry wrote:What's the main reason? The products I see here in Temple Town look cheaply done but admit to not being an expert.

There's really no point in buying animal products as a tourist, many countries won't allow skins etc in.
Years ago I bought a pool cue from the Philippines, the handle of the stick was wrapped in snake and coated over with a clear compound. I was told by the seller the snake was a road kill, a common pesty Burmese pyth. On return to Oz I was taken aside by two officers and questioned about the species, the officer that wanted the stick tried to reason that it could be a endangered species and wanted to drill thru the coating and take a sample, I laughed at him in disbelief which didn't bode well.
The decision to let me keep it was that I had declared it and 'don't do it again.' My friend (a snake handler))later assured me it was a common BP, a road kill.

Wait, so crocodile (Is it even crocodile?) shoes bought in Cambodia aren't as great of a deal because the leather is not fine enough? I've got guys wanting to sell me custom made croc shoes for $250ish.
I've got weddings coming up, and I really wanna dress like I'm hot shit, so it'd be great if I knew this now.

I'm sure the leather should be ok for shoes, depending on how well it is tanned. It might not be good enough quality for Chanel etc though.

I thought fur was murder. Why is reptile skin acceptable?
I'm picturing you as a child spooning with your pet croc now.Lucky Lucan wrote:My dad had a crocodile and used to walk it around his garden on a lead on sunny days. It needed heat though, and one day it froze to death during a power cut in winter. They are sort of cute when they are small, but they don't stay that way for long. They are like a strolling gin-trap.
The authorities like to build parks along the rivers because they give you good value for money. You only use a narrow strip of land but it feels much bigger due to the 500m wide river alongside.Steve Zodiac wrote:I was sceptical about the land clearances expecting new developments, but as of yet no building has taken place on the cleared land & the riverside walk is one of the few places in town that has changed for the better.
