Is tap water safe to drink in Phnom Penh?
Is tap water safe to drink in Phnom Penh?
Hello all!
I will be arriving in Phnom Penh a week later. I will be staying there for half a year or so.
I would just like to check if tap water is safe to drink? I'm not sure if I want to get a kettle or to buy bottled water to drink everyday. Have read that the water is heavily chlorinated but besides that, all is safe!
Would just like to have some views on this.
Thank you!

You can buy big bottles that last a week but where they fill them up is questionable.
Leave water out in an open container to help the chlorine evaperate.
I doubt six months consumption will have and effect.

Safe, some people tap water, some people filter it first. Others (bigger group of people) buy the widely available bottled water.

Tastes like gunpowder/sulfer to me if you don't let stand for a while before drinking it.

Most Westerners drink bottled water, not tap water.
vladimir thinks the Big Water industry has tricked everyone into thinking the tap water is unsafe.

I heard they put special chemicals in the tap water to make the general population conform.

Most local households Ive been in use filters or boil their water if they dont use 20 liter bottles.gavinmac wrote:Most Westerners drink bottled water, not tap water.

As for the OP, the tap water leaves the plant safe, but can become contaminated along the way. Its ok for washing, brushing teeth, sooking etc but it doesnt taste great.

Many a time I have had to run the tap for a minute or two as the chlorine smell is over powering and let's not forget that occasionally the water comes out a shade of grey or brown.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

But it's a safe brown. Totally safe. Don't let those greedy bottled water companies fool you.

As much as I hate the idea of bottled water I dont drink the tap water untreated. Especially in the rainy season. The tap water comes from Bassac, Tonle and Mekong rivers and is mostly made up of surface water which is full of all sorts of pollutants and sewage. Sure it is probably safe to drink right after being treated at the plant but I dont trust that water getting to my tap being unpolluted.
