That must have been at a half Aussie household or something. Back in the day, NZ was firmly Marmite, while Aus was vegemite.Don-Pierre de Plume wrote:First time I encountered Vegemite was in New Zealand in the old days...
I thought it was some equivalent of chocolate paste and put it on thick...

It was very much a Kiwi family consisting of husband and wife, with me as their boarder.
As my first years in an English speaking country I heard a certain frequently recurring word on the job, and asked my fellow workers what it meant. They just smiled. Being desirous to learn the language, at the dinner table I asked my landlord/landlady...
They were not amused

New Zealand's Marmite is nothing like the original UK marmite. It's made by Sanitarium and is much closer to Vegemite.
When I lived there you could actually get the UK stuff in the traditional bottle but it was relabeled as Our Mate.

I know NZ marmite and UK Marmite are very different. I love them all....can't stand Bovril though. Have never tried, nor will I ever try, flavoured marmites.

^ They go for silly money on eBay.
To be honest this Mighty Might yeast stuff is OK. It spreads like Marmite and tastes like a mix of Vegemite and Marmite.
I wonder if LJ could do a taste test; Marmite, Vegemite, SA Marmite, NZ Marmite, Promote and Mighty Might (Orange shop, SHV. $3.50 - much cheaper than Marmite/Vegemite) plus all the other spreads.
