Regards Retirement Visa, Please!
Regards Retirement Visa, Please!
Hi All,
This is my first post here, and I have browsed this site, but if I do something wrong, please correct me, please don't flame me, OK?
I'm retired, staying in Sihanoukville, on a 1 year visa which expires at the end of September, 2016.
A few days ago, I went to what is said to be the best travel agency in this town to apply for another 1 year visa. The travel lady asked what I'm doing, I said I'm retired. She said I *may* have to talk to the police about this to show them a document proving I'm retired. I don't have one; the last job I had was in P.P.- that was from 2002~2005. In 2005, my only brother, who lived in The West, got cancer. I went to be with him; help him. But, he passed away, leaving my 85 year old mother and I behind. I stayed with my Mom until she passed in 2008.
To the chase: While I had planned to return to work in P.P., I had now inherited money high up in the 6 figure dollar range. I hadn't asked my employer for a 'retirement document', but now I had no need to go back to work. Next option is to prove I have retirement income or enough money to support me for another year here in Cambodia. That's amusing, with my money I could support myself here until I'm 90+ years old. But I think there's no way my bank in The West could get me a document before the end of the month.
The only thing I can think of is to take a screenshot of my bank account, it includes the date the screenshot was taken. But if the police here see how much money I have, I don't know how they will react or if they will make further demands of me, you know?
I'd be most grateful to anyone who can give me knowledgeable advice as to my options at this point. I have no family now, nothing to return to my home country for. If my application is denied, I don't know what I can do.
Finally, if my application is denied, will I get my money back? And, was the lady at the travel agency just giving me a hard time, or was she telling it like it is?
Thanks for reading!

As it stands, the ER- Retirement option is an extension of stay of the E-type visa, it was only introduced at the start of Sept and the requirements that were reported in the media were vague. Wait to see what the travel agent comes back with, you may not have to provide any documents yet, but if you do have to and are unable to, then just apply for one of the other 5 E-type visa extension of stay options.
Report back to us when the agency lets you know whats up.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
It will be interesting to see which document you have to provide for the others...
But from what I understood from the scan PSD_Kiwi posted before, if you make your arrangements through an 'agent' there's no need for documentary proof.

Did you pay a fee already to the agency ?
I would just ask an extension of the ordinary visa, usually it's just pay and no questions asked. No need to complicate their/your life with the retirement visa that's not well defined yet.
I'd definitely not show the local cops any high amount on a bank account, you would only give them funny ideas.
Last but not least :

Maybe a good idea to apply for a one year extension in PP where it seems unlikely you will be asked any questions. In any case, do not worry, no way they will deny you an extension at the end of the day. As for your bank balance, do not reveal that to anyone, police or otherwise. If it comes to showing a bank statement with a minimum figure, transfer the minimum to a separate account and show that.

The OP raises an interesting question. Has anyone tried to get the usual one year extension at the usual places like Lucky Lucky this month and if so have they had similar issues?

Don't know about the new types of visas (yet), but I was told by the "Ma" herself at Lucky Lucky the fine for a late visa is now $10 per day, so they are implementing PART of the new plan.
We'll just have to wait and see for the new types of visas, but prices are definitely going up.

Really? You don't think that prices will go down? Wow!TristranandIsolde wrote:Don't know about the new types of visas (yet), but I was told by the "Ma" herself at Lucky Lucky the fine for a late visa is now $10 per day, so they are implementing PART of the new plan.

I believe that the overstay fine was increased long before the new visas were mentioned and was not PART of the new "plan". But you are the most qualified business expert in Cambodia.

Just out of curiosity, did you go to Mottah Travel next to UCB bank and speak with Ni?Savittre wrote:A few days ago, I went to what is said to be the best travel agency in this town to apply for another 1 year visa. From Ana Travel...
Hello,
We have not seen any Prakas or official announcement from the Immigration department yet. We just get told that changes are being made, usually with only a day or 2 notice.
Right now, no documents are required when submitting a passport for a visa extension. We are told that the passport-holder should choose a visa type and that, if questioned by the authorities, should be able to provide some proof of their status.
We are trying to find out what proof would be required but it all seems a little vague.
The prices remain the same for now.
Thanks

Thank everyone for replying. There were some questions in this thread, I'll answer:- logos, yes I paid when I applied, I believe that's standard practice. salvajeuno, I went to Ana's, I do not know the name of the lady I spoke to. PSD_Kiwi, thanks for the link! QED, I read what you said about the bank, sorry, but it's not clear to me. Do you have a minute to clarify, please?
I went to Ana's on Sept. 16, I was told they would call me around Sept. 24, and my visa's last day is Sept. 28. It seems that if my application is denied, I have very little (maybe not enough) to go to P.P. and apply there or here.
I will report back ASAP. Count on it!

This new "retirement visa" is of course to force people to have work permits - you cannot say any more that you don't have one because you're retired... This gives a lot of people headache because many companies don't declare their foreign workers as I understand they have to pay the authorities per head? It's catch 22 as workers cannot apply for work permit for themselves.
I don't have any retirement documents either as I was self-employed in the old country and in practice the same in here... Creating documents of proof will be another super opportunity for yet another form of corruption.
How about creating a business on the paper, say something online? At least then you can apply for a work permit and not worry about being hassled by police either way?
