Advice needed for an English guy with a Sri Lankan partner
Advice needed for an English guy with a Sri Lankan partner
Hello all, congrats on a great forum with some very helpful advice, my problem is quite specific and I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with some information.
I am an English Guy with a Sri Lankan partner, we have been together for three years living in Sri Lanka and wish to move and work in Cambodia.
Unfortunately, Sri Lanka is on one of the restricted countries list which wont allow a visa on entry to Cambodia. At the moment my plan is to travel first, arrange to extend my ordinary visa to a 12 month visa, find accommodation and then arrange for my partner to join me.
We have read some shocking stories about the way Sri Lankans are treated like criminals at Embassies around SE Asia, which is a shame as the civil war ended here in 1999, and its been a very peaceful country to live in since.
So basically i am after any good advice as to the best way to get her into the country and obtain a working Visa, If it helps our situation I am quite willing to issue and letter of recommendation or responsibility for my partner to any authorities that may request it. But being self employed i wont be able to use a Company to issue anything.
Thanks a lot in advance
Robin

I've moved this to Q & A because it is likely to get more relevant answers.
My sense is that you're worrying about nothing. As things currently stand just come over, get yourself settled and then bring her in on ordinary visa and extend it while she is here. Brownexile - an Indian national - may have other thoughts but I dont foresee any great difficulties.

If Sri Lanka is on the list of nationalities that cannot obtain a VOA, then she will need to apply for a visa in advance from the nearest Cambodian Embassy (not sure if there's one in Sri Lanka?). She should apply for an E-type visa, not a T-type, which can be extended. The Embassy may, or may not, ask for her to provide documentation to support her application for an E-type visa.
Sorry can't be of more help to you, best of luck.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

They usually ask for an invitation letter from a company before issuing a business visa for people from restricted countries, so you need to find someone that has a company and then have them write a letter with some semi-plausible business reason about why she needs to travel here. I know an Indian and an Afghani that have been through the process, both are very articulate, and educated, so not the kind of people customs will be giving the once over when they arrive. They both just had contacts issue invitation letters, I think after that not many questions are asked.

It wasn't too peaceful during the rest of the civil war that went on till 2009.Robin456 wrote:

Having written official invitation letters for a few people from non-VOA countries, along with 150 or so for people who were eligible, and having my mobile number on every letter, I'm pretty sure as long as it looks like a legit letterhead, it will be sufficient. Never once did I get a call from immigration confirming anyone's 'position'.starkmonster wrote:They usually ask for an invitation letter from a company before issuing a business visa for people from restricted countries, so you need to find someone that has a company and then have them write a letter with some semi-plausible business reason about why she needs to travel here. Wow. How did you manage just 'to live' with her without an official marriage? Sri Lanka is very conservative concerning single girls. Is she a Tamil or a Sinhalese?
Sri Lanka is one of only ten countries whose citizens require a valid visa in their passport prior to presenting self at the border control. Probably a form of punishment for bringing Buddhism here in the 13th century lol
As someone said you will need an official letter of invitation for her, giving reasons for her stay in Cambodia. There is no Cambodian embassy in Sri Lanka. The nearest one is in Chennai if I remember correctly.

Why do you all automatically assume that his parter is female, and/or wishes to be addressed as "her"? Racist cis-pigs the lot of you!
Maybe brownexile's hostess bar "boss" can "hire" him/her/idontknowwtfisoktosayanymore?

To be fair, when I was reading the OP for the first time, I initially assumed his "partner" was a dude because gay people often use the word "partner" whereas heterosexual people usually say "boyfriend" or "girlfriend."
