7 Makara?
There is a neighborhood in Phnom Penh called 7 Makara. It seems like a strange name for a Neighborhood l. What does it mean?
Named after the 1 day a year Cambodians begrudgingly admit that the Vietnamese might have helped them out a little bit. 8 Makara, business as Younsual.

"7 Makara" is Khmer for "7 January" which is the date when the Khmer Rouge regime was toppled by Vietnamese forces in 1979.

Where is this area? Is there a Vietnamese presence there?
I wonder if there was any reason why it was chosen.

Phnom Penh tower area, I think.

I don't recall Vietnamese diaspora to be deeply rooted there as in Chbar Ampeou district.
Maybe the district got named 7 Makara because if I recall correctly the celebration of the ousting of the KR was held at the Olympic Stadium?

There's a good map of French protectorate era Phnom Penh which is labelled essentially by ethnicity. I'm a bit drunk to find it now, but the entire surrounds of orrusie was "quarter annam" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annam_%28 ... otectorate
There be a road in SHV of the same name runs though down town. This may be why then it was widened in the last 18 months to a 4 lane road instead of the touristy crappy 'beach road, serendipity road' area - both not official road names

There are loads of places called Prampi Makara, including the overpass on Russian Federation over 271/598.
Here's the map maybe mentioned above, other maps put the Vietnamese area just west of where Psah Thmei is now, which was previously the Chinese quarter. The red parts on this map are just plans.
Apparently this map/plan is from 1953.

That's the one, though someone on the skyscrapercity forum puts it at 1925.
Those two giant parks would be good right about now.

1925 would be about right as the Grand Canal is shown and that was filled in come the '30sepidemiks wrote:That's the one, though someone on the skyscrapercity forum puts it at 1925.

And Psar Thmey was built in '37 or something and it's not on the map. 1953 is the year the frogs packed up and went home isn't it? Pretty sure hanky knows all this. Probably just a typo.
