I'm moving on from PP and need to stock up on some basic clothes and shoes - not designer items, nor those intended for refugees
Any suggestions of a shopping centre that would offer a reasonable choice?

You are moving on from Cambodia and you don't know where to buy clothes? how long have you been here?simon44 wrote:I'm moving on from PP and need to stock up on some basic clothes and shoes - not designer items, nor those intended for refugees

It depends on your size. Markets such as TTP can be useful but if you are a big western fatty then you'll struggle to get clothes there. Also trying on clothes in the market is a struggle. Shoes, socks and boxers can be easily bought there, probably tshirts too depending on your style - trousers not so much.
Olympic market has loads of clothes but I think they are mostly Asian sizes - Olympic is not as stuffy as the other markets. O'Russey market also has loads but you could be left wandering around in there for days & good luck trying to find your moto when you come out.
Sovanah Mall is more pleasant to shop in that the markets and has a variety of styles. Jeans, other trousers, sports gear, smart shirts and shoes easy to pick up. Also is airconned so more pleasant to try things on.
I haven't been there for a few years but I imagine Sorya Mall would be similar.
I'm not sure where sells clothes 'intended for refugees' - it's a fairly small customer base in Cambodia, in fact they may all have left now.
Unless you're moving to Laos or Myanmar I would wait until you're in your new country. Pretty much everywhere is better for western clothes than Cambodia.
And why is that do you think? seems like more and more western tourists around according to the stats. are clothes that are destined for the white expat market not getting into the country? higher customs price?scobienz wrote:Unless you're moving to Laos or Myanmar I would wait until you're in your new country. Good question.
Largely for two separate but interrelated reasons. Firstly the clothes that end up here are sourced from China and the retailers will always go for the cheap end of the market. There aren't enough westerners yet to justify buying in larger sizes so westerners give up trying to buy them here so retailers don't stick them and so the cycle continues.
And Phnom Penh is light years away from being a shopping destination like Bangkok, KL and Singspore. With those options on our doorstep and the competition they provide each other, Phnom Penh will never be able to break into that circle.

it seems there are more new arrivals every year, like the op. even us old timers are just waiting for the word. if you include outsized English teachers, thats a fairly large market i would have thought. its a drag going to bkk.
if the op is Asian sized, his gf can buy him Levis for around 4 or 5$ from the local markets etc.

Yeah, of course I meant Golden Sorya Mall. But while he is there checking it out he may as well have a look also in Sorya Shopping Mall beside central market.

Sorya (NOT Golden Sorya) Mall, central market, Russian market, Kandal market, old market, bkk market, pencil, paragon, Aeon, and the hundreds, if not thousands, of other markets and small shops that I haven't mentioned, all have basic clothes and footwear. Should be pretty easy to meet your requirements. Have fun up north!

Outsized English teachers are not going to have the buying capacity to make it worthwhile local clothes stores importing decent stuff. Didn't vlad once boast about buying $2-$3 shirts for work - maybe I'm mistaken. Either way, why would a retailer bother, when the mark-up is so low.Abou-Gor wrote:

The kind of new arrival expats who might want to spend $70 on decent jeans, $40 for a shirt and $150-$200 for a half decent suit in western sizes is also the type of expat who looks around at his or her options, see a pile of shit for sale, and is happy to jump on a flight to a local shopping city where prices are likely lower and the choice is much greater.
I'm not exactly small (and not exactly huge either), and the mrs has no problems finding jeans/shorts/shirts etc that fit me well enough from Kampong Speu market (I never go shopping). Unless you're over 6 foot 2 and/or a proper fatty, it can't be that hard in PP.
If you are the latter, PM Vladimir to ask him where he sources his mu-mus from. Probably imports them from Africa.

@scobienz
LoL, yes I'm moving back to Myanmar to take up a new teaching job, and judging from the lack of shops selling anything even 10% decent when I last worked in Myanmar in 2012, I'm better off buying it in PP/
I took this job because no job opportunities camev up in PP for me, but also because this new job is in Naypyidaw, the deserted city built by the generals (well, their workmen!) in the middle of nowhere...
Once I've settled in, I'll upload some photos.
