I bought a motorcycle. Hurray!
Where do I go and what do I bring to transfer ownership from the previous owner to me? Does he need to go there with me? I was told five minutes across the Japanese bridge to some government office.
Cheers.

For insurance or why? I dont know if its a legit reason not to, but some ppl say they dont want to put it in their name as when they sell it later on the moto will remain in their name, but they dont want that. Most ppl just keep the regristration-card and papers from the deal. One friend when he bought a car made the deal at the station geting a policestamp on it to avoid future problem with the guy trying to get it back or w/e.songtansally wrote:Y s. What ive read some time ago was that you first need a letter of residence before you can actually put it in your name. You might just ask around in dealer shops if they can help you get a fixer if you dont get any good answers here.
I tried several times to register my motorbike bought secondhand from an Australian, but no matter how many documents we produced they always wanted more. Finally they refused to register because the previous owner was no longer in Cambodia.... this was the 4th attempt made and after that I finally gave up. I had letter from Sangkat, sales agreement with thumbprints and signatures from two witnesses. (Reason for registration is to be able to take it across the borders for longer road trips.)
I think there are two reasons for the difficulties.
- First they will do everything to have you register through an agent because this is dealt with in the backroom where no one can monitor the money transaction that will need to take place.
- Second the transaction process is becoming more legit and less corrupt and when no one seems to know the new rules yet, everything sort of grinds to a halt.
Bought a new scooter at a dealership and getting the registration was a formality. The above only applies buying second hand.
