I think you misunderstood. Did she gain the 2nd nationality after the age of 18? Because according to what I read you might lose US citizenship if you do.Phuket2006 wrote:yes i am sure,my daughter holds 2 passports and most of her friends from school here own 2 and they are all over 21Kachang wrote:Are you sure about the US? Assuming you are US, over 18 (since you have a daughter over 21), holding a US passport, what would (could?) happen if you got a Cambodian passport? No problems?Potentially Expatriating Acts
Section 349 of the INA (8 U.S.C. 1481), as amended, states that U.S. nationals are subject to loss of nationality if they perform certain specified acts voluntarily and with the intention to relinquish U.S. nationality. Briefly stated, these acts include:
[*]obtaining naturalization in a foreign state upon one's own application after the age of 18 (Sec. 349 (a) (1) INA);

OK, different situation then. For children, usually different laws apply (same for my daughter).Phuket2006 wrote:i am American, her mom was thai

But for the people (assuming they're adults) posting on this forum, considering a Cambodian passport (because if you have one you can own land for instance) - I strongly advise them to check the national laws of their first nationality since accepting a second nationality voluntarily might have consequences. At least for me it would, and to be honest, I wasn't aware of this until about two years ago.

They certainly do, but it costs a lot less (maybe 10,000 vs 100,000).phat kunthea wrote:By law, Khmer also needs a work permit when working so I was told by my office manager.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I know of a few UK passport holders who have lived in NZ and gained citizenship holding both passports.
Exception to the rule.

There's and important phrase there, "if they perform certain specified acts voluntarily and with the intention to relinquish U.S. nationality." Please take special notice of "and with the intention to relinquish U.S. nationality." If you gain a second passport, but not with the intention of relinquishing your U.S. nationality, than you won't lose it -- regardless of your age.Kachang wrote:I think you misunderstood. So, in short, yes, if you are American, at any age, you may get a second passport/nationality.
