Would you drink water from this?
Would you drink water from this?
Mr B52 just got this 20l bottle of water. We both think that it's probably not safe to drink as it looks like it's been refilled from a hose or something (the top hole is covered with just a piece of tape rather than the usual plastic plug).
I think it's not worth taking back to the mom n pop store as the guy might lose face if we accuse him of refilling the bottle himself. It's only a couple of dollars. Mr B52 thinks that the mom n pop shop guy should definitely replace/give money back as he's ripping us off; not the money but the principle.
I should also mention the mom n pop is opposite our apt, the apt you get to by walking down a dark, dodgy alleyway.
We said K440 can settle this debate: take it back or not?

Won't the owner just smile and say it's good water and he didn't refill it?

Go back and tell them you are not willing to take it. They will probably replace it with something that looks cleaner and has the proper plastic plug in the top no questions asked. But if these guys are selling stuff like that then it might be better to find another water company.
Dude, dont worry about this guy "losing face" over a bottle of water worth under 2 dollars. People worry about that far too much and generally have no idea about the concept. He will not lose face and there is no way you can prove he filled it with a hose or not anyhow. So your options are to take it back and ask for a cleaner one and trust whats inside or to buy from somewhere else.

Mr. B52 checking in:
JessB52 pointed out the guy might take affront even if I didn't ask for a new bottle or refund. I personally doubt that.
What baffles me most is that he'd do this to someone who's been living across from him for over 2 years (and regularly buys stuff from him). Especially seen as he literally has 3 competing "random assortment of stuff"-shops within 50 yards of his shop.
To be clear; I don't want to go back and accuse him of stuff. I just wanted to bring the bottle back (5 min after I bought it) and at least ask for the deposit back (as if it were empty). Then get a new bottle directly from the bottling place tomo.JessB52 wrote: I think it's not worth taking back to the mom n pop store as the guy might lose face if we accuse him of refilling the bottle himself. Yeah, I think the water guy will say it's fine and he doesn't fill it himself.
If he does, however, replace it then I agree, I don't know how much I trust it.
If a full bottle is brought back just after it's been bought then you'd have to give reasons etc then this is when the trouble starts.
Empty it, take it back in a couple of days. Get deposit back. Call different water people.

Just empty it out and bring it back in an hour for the deposit and tell him you were really thirsty.flo wrote: To be clear; I don't want to go back and accuse him of stuff. This kind of thing happens all the time. Its far too common that Khmer will do business with someone and for that business relationship to go downhill after time. Sometimes it seems the opposite of back home. Not always, but I have dealt with many businesses and have have had to stop dealing with them after they keep getting more greedy or more expensive or offering shittier service/product for the same money after a period of time.flo wrote:Mr. B52 checking in:

The whole point is - do you trust that the water is not filled with tap water or not? Would it make you feel better to buy a clean bottle from the same guy right after you figured he sold you a dirty bottle filled with a hose? If he has a clean bottle its going to invariably be filled with the same water as the dirty ass one he sold you in the first place right? If you dont trust it, then take it back and ask for your deposit and find another place to deal with. His loss and no loss of face.

I've only ever brought back one of those bottles once. The water smelled weird and I noticed there was green algae or something on the inside. I dumped all the water first because fuckit if I was going to carry a 20 kg bottle all the way down the stairs and 50m down the street. No problem getting it replaced though, it was obvious the fucking thing was diseased.

I've been reading once, that the water quality in Phnom Penh is actually quite good and sometimes better than bottled water. The thing is: Most pipes aren't good to get the good water to the tab...
Sometimes, when I forgot to change my water, I drink tab water for an evening. I never had problems so far. I don't live in PP. I live at the beach.

I read recently that they have different outlet points around Phnom Penh where the water is tested from regularly and it is fine if not better than the bottles... does that actually happen, who knows. I thought the plastic bottles would also have a lifespan. Can you drink the water straight from the tap and if so why do so many people buy the bottles. I know some people use filters. I would like to stop having to lug those bottles around.C-Mon wrote:I've been reading once, that the water quality in Phnom Penh is actually quite good and sometimes better than bottled water. Of course you can, but it's pretty uncouth and sometimes the water goes up your nose.Sunnyside up wrote:Can you drink the water straight from the tap
I prefer to use a drinking receptacle.
Surely it would be easier to just bring it back without emptying it out and telling the guy I wasn't thirsty after all.gavinmac wrote: Just empty it out and bring it back in an hour for the deposit and tell him you were really thirsty.

I was apartment hunting once around psar daum tkouv, and parked up when i saw a for rent sign and a phone number to call. While sitting there I noticed an open gate where inside a few workers had hundreds of 500ml water bottles lined up and were filling them from a hose. Didn't look at all like hygienic practice or clean water. It happens.

I've never had this problem with the cases of Kulen that I purchase.
