My girlfriend started studying at ACE today. Short and simple version of the story is that her spoken English is indisputably considerably better than her teacher, and we're both pretty disappointed about it.
Slightly longer version of the story; She spent 7 years working as a nanny in Malaysia for a great family that treated her relatively well, and paid for her to study English and Chinese (they come to visit here occasionally and seem like exceptionally nice people). As she was spending all her time speaking English and Chinese, she got pretty good at both (well beyond "normal Khmer" level). However, reading and writing was never part of her job and (while she is still better at it than most) her skills in that area aren't on the same level as speaking. This meant that when she took the written placement test for ACE, she ended up in a low enough level to have a Khmer teacher.
Neither of us minded, we just wanted her to improve her written English, and figured if the school thought a Khmer teacher would be most appropriate then we'd just trust their judgement. We didn't consider the possibility that the teacher would have worse spoken English than her, because it's ACE and I had heard they were legit.
Her first term there is already paid for so she's going to see it out, but in the meantime we'd like to find out what the alternatives are for when the term ends. Any relevant info would be appreciated.
Where to learn English
ICS? That's where they just had the jumper?
OP, maybe talk to ACE about the problem and ask to switch the program? And be certain it isn't a case of showing off..."I'm better than the teacher" if it's not reality.

Yes, ICS is that school. I don't think the suicide was because of quality of school. I could be wrong.

I think the ethos of the school, the characters' of some of the other teachers, the curriculum and the wage had a part to play.violet wrote:Yes, ICS is that school. I don't think the suicide was because of quality of school. I could be wrong.

Yes, I would hope that they are open to re-evaluating her level and putting her in the appropriate class.GMJS-440 wrote:ICS? That's where they just had the jumper?

When you say her speaking is really good, do you mean her accent is great, or her general grammar/pronunciation are great (or both)? It's fairly rare to have perfect speaking but atrocious writing. What's wrong with her writing? Does she lack the basics like ABCs and so on? Or is her grammar/spelling atrocious? Why not hire a private tutor if writing is really the only issue?

Are you suggesting that as a position has opened up she should apply for a teaching position?GMJS-440 wrote:ICS? That's where they just had the jumper?
