The past few years I hear a lot of news about The Phnom Penh construction boom, the Chinese turning Sihanoukville into "The New Macau" and so forth. Even Kampot and BTB get its share of news but not much is ever said about Ko Kong. The usual noise that is made when Ko Kong is mentioned goes like "oh its really shit there" or "so boring" or "don't bother". I have only been through there once when travelling from Thailand to Sihanoukville but never stopped and as I haven't visited Thailand in a few years have no compelling reason to visit. So my question is whether it is that bad that the Chinese don't even go there, the kampot druggies avoid the place and the sihanoukville scum don't visit? Surely the place must have some redeeming features for the long term stayer?
Trial bike riding? Nature trips? Beaches/islands? Surely there is something good about the place , if so lets here it1
Ko Kong.....shit or not?
The chicken schnitzel at fat Sam's is pretty good, used to get a fair bit of trade from the Thai visa hoppers.
Koh Kong is big and the Chinese are there http://www.phnompenhpost.com/business/c ... t-gets-nod

Cafe Laurent is a great restaurant.(not sure if it's still there)
My friend lives in KK and loves it
Not a big fan based on the 5 days I spent there, scamming hotel, rip-off attempts by tuk-tuks, the hotel and boatmen

So your negative impressions of Koh Kong were about money?
I just remember it being a shitty mosquito infested dump.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
Gavinmac didn't enjoy Koh Kong much? It must not have many hostess bars and restaurants with western food.
"The final straw actually involved my mortal enemy vladimir, who you may or may not know is an insufferable, overposting asshat."
ok, quiet beaches, some good food, nature, water falls and mangroves for those into pneumatophores. Easy enough access to Thailand and the Cardomoms in the dry season and not many/any hostess bars. It really does sound like a place I may enjoy for a week. Thanks for the info.

As I've stated elsewhere before, most of us resent scamming. As an ex-Vegas casino lawyer you may be more tolerant of it.gavinmac wrote:son of vladimir wrote:

That was my take away when I visited. Had an excellent seafood lunch set in the mangroves, with very Thai flavors coming through. I could see a lot of the expats in Kampot packing up and moving over to Koh Kong province, setting up perhaps in Tatai or the town itself, as more and more degenerates end up in Kampot.Clap wrote:ok, quiet beaches, some good food, nature, water falls and mangroves for those into pneumatophores. At some stage surely the coastal area will run out of quiet or normal places.
Where will people go then?

Trump is a genius!
I always try to spend a week in KH when I pass through Sam and his mates are a fountain of information getting around the place. At night you go out the main road to the karaoke bars and see the immigration officers spending all the money they extorted of the the Thai border crossing tourists on hot young girls.
You have to be careful in some of the shops most prices are labelled in Thai Baht the old petrol station over the small bridge in the town fuel bowser was in TB then they will try to give you a shit conversion rate on USD.
Rumour I heard mid this year when "cafe 51" Phnom pehn GSM closed the no shirt frenchy who ran it moved down there to set something up. Someone else might have more on that
