For the past few months my electricity bill has been going up as the amount of KwH was increased by say, 40%. I don't think we're really using that much electricity- we don't use aircon and besides that its just fridge, lights, fans, washing machine on the weekends, computer, rice cooker... I don't see how it could have increased so much.
Amazingly the landlord agrees with me and has agreed to have a technician come to look at the meter.
Have you ever heard of the meter being off?
Ever have any problem with your electricity meter/counter?

They get old, they go off.
Especially in a country with such unreliable electricity.
You can pick up a new one for $30 approx.

Someone may have tapped into your supply. Happened to us, the bill went up each month for no apparent reason. When it was almost double, I started sniffing around and traced all the cables. One cable went into a bulkhead of the shop below us. Got the landlord involved and he agreed to get a new cable from the meter to the flat put in, bypassing the one going into the shop. Bill returned to normal immediately. Fuckers went out of business later, so got what was coming to them.
In another flat, we had the meter going too slow. The bill was going down each month and I realised that there was a fault with the meter. I let the landlady know and she put in a new one the same day. I think she was slightly grateful about that, we could have said nothing, but that's not the way we roll.

Check the fridge.
Most fridges do have a fan internally, to blow over the internal cooling radiator. That radiator picks up ice, which is designed to defrost, the moments the compressor does not run. Though, when the ice build-up is to large (forgotten to close the fridge door, or putting wet bottles in the fridge, etc), the downtime of the compressor is no longer enough to clean away the ice. And then, ice rapidly builds up, the fan gets blocked, compressor starts running continuously, etc Once you get that happening, your electric bill can easily go up some USD 50-60 a month.
Typical symptom: Initially the fridge does cool "very good", liquids do freeze up. And later on, the fridge does not seem to cool any longer.
First repair attempt: Turn the fridge off, open the door and leave it idle for 3-4 days.
If no luck, the repairman, it could be, water ingressed sealed switches, etc . Count on a repair bill of USD 30.
Don't ask why I do know this.....

We just had a 100% increase this month, and didn't think much of it as a new baby means more fans on 24hrs, more lights on more often, washing machine running twice a day (instead of twice a week), hot water heater on full to combat the cold spell, and a bunch of visitors staying throughout the month, so the second water heater running 6 times a day, another AC running overnight and two dozen more phones on charge and the kettle working overtime for coffee and bath time. On paying the bill, I checked the receipts from previous months, and they'd accidentally used the meter reading from the month prior. Turns out all the extra usage amounted to a whopping $9, not $50.
Previous place we lived in had a wonky meter. Sometimes it would be super low, other months high. Some night time experiments to see if the power was being tapped turned up no results, so had them get an electrician to swap it our for a new one and had consistent bills ever after. The meter and installation cost no more than $20 iirc.

I thought it might be this also. I tried turning everything off/unplugging everything a few days ago, and the meter went down to no movement.Nasty Canasta wrote:Someone may have tapped into your supply. I'll try it again though as it may depend on the time of day.
Interesting, will have to check this out. Never thought something related to the fridge could add that much.v12 wrote:Check the fridge.

I'll let you all know if I'm ever able to figure out what happened.

That's making the assumption that it was running lights.
My suspicion was that an upgraded AC unit in the shop below us was the culprit.
Fuckers went under anyway and the old shop is back to a bare shell selling local food.
