How do the locals and other foreigners in Cambodia treat you?
How do the locals and other foreigners in Cambodia treat you?
Here in Japan, most Japanese people just ignore me if I ignore them. I am in survivor mode most of the time (not always) where I just go to work, then to the supermarket to get the food I need and return to my apartment.
I have a few Japanese and foreign friends and a Japanese wife, but I don't go out of my way to get to know a lot of people. With this in mind, I wanted to ask what the Cambodian people and other expats there are like?
I could be off but from what I have read, a lot of the Cambodians are more outgoing and like to talk a lot? Are most of the expats chill people or are they the drunk, rude, loud frat boy types?
Do most people leave you alone when you are just on your way somewhere and minding your own business?
I read that sometimes locals rob foreigners at gun point? Now this would never happen in Japan. How often does this happen? Would dressing kind of poor/not rich looking help avoid this? Maybe being in certain areas helps?
Are a lot of the locals racist against foreigners? (I'm a blond haired, blue eyed Caucasian).

In the countryside, people stare a lot and kids scream "HELLO, HELLO, WHAT YOUR NAME?" over and over again.whiteboy wrote:Here in Japan, most Japanese people just ignore me if I ignore them. Pretty tolerant of 'crazy' white people and their idiosyncrasies.I have a few Japanese and foreign friends and a Japanese wife, but I don't go out of my way to get to know a lot of people. With this in mind, I wanted to ask what the Cambodian people and other expats there are like?

Most of the time, but sometimes people want to practise English and old drunk guys want you to drink beer with them.Do most people leave you alone when you are just on your way somewhere and minding your own business?

Most expats are alcoholic or drug addicted (sometimes publicly shirtless) loners who won't live to see age 60.
Don't move to Cambodia with a Japanese wife, she'll hate it.

Yeah, at least 97.5% of them.gavinmac wrote:Most expats are alcoholic or drug addicted (sometimes publicly shirtless) loners who won't live to see age 60.

I’m the only normal expat I know.

gavinmac's the gift that keeps on giving. A barren, lone, white male that dispenses parenting advice to those with kids and marital advice to those with wives.gavinmac wrote:Don't move to Cambodia with a Japanese wife, she'll hate it.
Something tells me that without the internet to employ your eccentricities, you would have ended up in the top of some university clock tower taking out your stifled rage on the happy couples below.

They generally treat you very good and are a laid back lot.
Well, that is until they take to the roads when it feels like they are attacking you from all angles, and often seem to actually go out of their way to drive across you.
I blame Facebook.
Or maybe it's me that's the problem giving way all the time which confoozes them?

"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
I think it's not correct to talk about 'foreigners' in general, because different types of foreigners are treated / looked at quite differently.
In general, I would say Cambodians look up to (white) Australians, Americans and Europeans and these are treated with respect. In general that is... This is not true for wife beaters wearing guys, girls swimming in bikinis, and I am sure others can come up with more examples.
Africans are treated quite differently - if I were or looked like one I'd probably skip Cambodia. There's a lot of prejudice and racism I think.
Asians in general are treated nice, although there's a general resentment against Vietnamese, there's a feeling of rivalry with Thais (although most Cambodians can not distinguish a Thai from a Khmer other than by language...), and I have noticed a growing resentment against Chinese over the last few months. The latter even in the small provincial town where I live.
The road thing is true, once on wheels Cambodians are ruthless, no matter what you look like or where you are from - it feels like they're on the hunt for you.

Not all foreigners are created equally.
The Chinese resentment is real.
Black skinned racism is very real.
Vietnamese are easy targets for ignorance.
If you come here (as a white skinned westerner) and dress the right way, respect culture, speak a bit of the language then you’ll (largely) be treated like a king. And your nose will be complemented every single day.

You can have a pretty good idea by looking at the forum membersI have a few Japanese and foreign friends and a Japanese wife, but I don't go out of my way to get to know a lot of people. With this in mind, I wanted to ask what the Cambodian people and other expats there are like?
Usually khmer are pretty open to chit chat even if their english is lacking. For expats, it depends on the areaI could be off but from what I have read, a lot of the Cambodians are more outgoing and like to talk a lot? Are most of the expats chill people or are they the drunk, rude, loud frat boy types?
Hmmm, you might be harassed by the local "public transportation" aka "sir, tuktuk?"Do most people leave you alone when you are just on your way somewhere and minding your own business?
Like everywhere else, avoid dodgy area.I read that sometimes locals rob foreigners at gun point? Now this would never happen in Japan. How often does this happen? Would dressing kind of poor/not rich looking help avoid this? Maybe being in certain areas helps?
well, you're just a "barang" but I think "barang" is less pejorative than "gaijin"Are a lot of the locals racist against foreigners? (I'm a blond haired, blue eyed Caucasian).

Now, you're just being tedious. You previously described Scobienz as "the gift that keeps on giving" and DetroitMuscle as "the gift that keeps on giving." You apparently have an infinite number of sock puppets, but you're just re-treading the same tired ground hurling repetitive shotgun insults at other posters in a lazy and not particularly clever manner.
Meanwhile, even your oh so close pal andyinasia has agreed that I possess a "sardonic wit" and "razor-sharp legal mind" that made me "far and away the best poster on K440 for years." He even praised me for digging out old posts and holding it against posters even though the "victims at the end of [my] barbs weren't too happy."
Then andyinasia said that everyone should get "less bloody sensitive and take the digs in the spirit of banter."
Not long after that, andyinasia had a hissy fit and threw his toys out of the pram and quit the forum when I dug up some of his old posts and directed some comments towards him about the striking similarity between his posts and those of Gibbon Arms.
Andyinasia seems to have a rather hypocritical zeal for barbs and insults on K440, until he's on the receiving end, then he promptly turns into an imbalanced, jello-headed crybaby.

Five years here; I couldn't be happier, and it's because of the way I'm treated. The Khmer are good people, outgoing and friendly. They seem to enjoy the barangs, like to talk, always eager to help. I don't have Khmer friends, but I also don't have barang friends; don't know about getting down and personal with them. But on a day by day, mostly transactional basis, I like them. I always dress neatly, shave and groom. I never drink, don't hustle girls or women (or boys or men), don't create scenes when things don't go as they should. I don't treat Khmers as children, stupid, or cute. I don't think that talking louder in English will make them comprehend it any better. I learned the language, although it's an ongoing process. I lived in the US for 50 some years, escaped 11 years ago, and ended up in PP. I'd rather be here on a horrible day than there on a good one.
I love it when I tweak gavinmac's nerve. Didn't you learn way back in middle school when you were getting shoved inside lockers, how to properly deal with bullies?gavinmac wrote:jello-headed crybaby.
Just the fact that you look time out of your life to research, link, type out, and post that hissy fit retort, made my entire day.
Can I have your permission to reinstate my deleted avatar or will you just carpet-bomb any and every mod/admin with whiny pm's once again and try to get me banned?
Oh, yeah and regarding Andy. One day the light will go on in the obsessive, cavernous head of yours and you'll realize that you owe that man a huge apology for your idiotic circumstantial witch-hunt. But I don't care either way, you're not doing me any harm.
Anyway, back to your original post here. You should probably try posting over on Cambodia Parents Network. Plenty of discussions and questions about children and wives where your sardonic dipshit suggestions would be more than appreciated, I'm sure.
