If you're planning on visiting Cambodia, or living there, you ought to do some research. The British Embassy in Phnom Penh have information and some do's and don't's.

Of course this information does not reflect the actual goings on in real time on the ground in Cambodia, but it is a start.
For the most part, Cambodia is actually safer than England these days. Assassinations and stabbings and what not.

In terms of politics and unrest? Unless you're Cambodian, you have nothing to worry about. You keep your thoughts to yourself. Western democratic rights don't belong in the East.

Sure, he communicates a lot of information about Cambodia, though ignoring the obvious reality using Hun Sen methods and calling somebody raising the serious protests reality an abroad "provocateur", declassifies the value of his writings on the whole. It's just like bullying at school, power play.Miguelito wrote:Lucky Lucan is probably the last person on this forum you should be firing that shot at.v12 wrote: Maybe I know about these things, because I live among Khmers in stead of a Western bubble, when I am in Cambodia.
Back to reality: When, with just 1-2 days time to organise, that amounts of people do come to protest (or mourn or sympathise, or whatever), there is sufficient proof, there are massive feelings of political unhappiness in the country. Only ostriches tend to ignore that, or just try to be lucky.
Whether shit is going to hit the fan, in the upcoming 4-5 months, I don't know. For now, the potential threat is not going to prevent me from my next Cambodian visits, though it is certainly something to closely monitor.
The "positive" side on the stability aspect of the whole is, that those able to organise upcoming protests (ie the CNRP leaders) largely all fled the country or are locked up. A decapitated political party will have difficulties to win elections, so to say. At the government power play field, it can be expected, nothing will change. Whether the Cambodian population will accept that, is unclear. It doesn't solve the unrest among the Khmers, though. And given the country modernizes very fast, it is just a matter of time, before the CNRP heritage will become supported by a majority of the Cambodian population.
Compare the situation with 50 years ago in the US, with Martin Luther King being an example. It takes time for a change.

It's all a bit one sided. You can't take advantage of the vices Cambodia has to offer (as a foreigner, Expat and or Tourist) which you can't do back in your respective country... Examples include cheap beer, parading the streets drunk, cheap cigarettes, being able to smoke in most public places (among others which is a list too long to write)... and then complain about the politics. Stinks of hypocrisy.

About 18 months ago I was genuinely planning for an extended holiday in a neighbouring country around election time. Now, it seems almost guaranteed that to be a nice quiet weekend at home with the family.

That made me laugh, are you seriously comparing Martin Luther King's nonviolent civil rights movement with a movement whose main platform is propagating hatred against a historical foe? I recognize that the ruling party makes mistakes and that some changes are needed. A pogrom against the Yuon is not one of the changes I would suggest. If there was a viable opposition I would support it, but not these dangerous clowns.v12 wrote:

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
